Core 50mg still "ok" reel
Core 50mg still "ok" reel
I've actually had my core 50mg unspooled all year. Seems like every since these sv spool reels, tws reels, mgl spool reels come out, I've actually don't use it. I've noticed every now AND then a mint one will sell for around $300 on eBay. Wondering if anyone still use theirs religiously AND what for. I know technology has come a long way, but the core 50mg is a classic. Debating on selling it, to help fund another mgl, steez or aldebaran. Is it still good for finesse over a sv spool reel OR good for long distance over a mgl spool or tws reel?

Keep it. It's a great reel with a preferred by some brake system. You can always source those other reels.

All time great reel in my eyes. I had mine out this weekend with the Avail 0918 spool. Still very smooth and fun to fish. Ill never give any of my 50Es up.

I wouldnt pay $300 for a core think the 70 has it beat stock vs stock. 50mg only has the light weight going for it and aftermarket will help it perform to a higher level. Still a fine reel just showing its age.

The core 50 and original 09 aldebaran are still my go to reels. I love them. Wouldn't pay $300 now though.....

Toss a 7.7 brass gear set in it and pitch with it

There will always be newer technology and innovations that improve on previous generations, but that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the classics. I wish I would have kept a few more of my Scorpion xt's... In fact last season I tried the og Steez 103 ha and actually found I preferred it over the newer one.

I love my Curado50E. Now, that being said, I recently acquired a Scorpion70XG that blows the 50 platform away in smoothness, ergonomics (kind of a subjective thing I know), and power. I didnt think it was possible, but took the plunge with the Yen being down.

Heck yeah, it's an awesome reel.
I don't fish light weight rods, so I went with the curado 50e/scorpion xt's, but I loved those little reels.
And as mentioned, now that you can get a 7.7 brass gear set, all the better.
(Plus there's a good deal of aftermarket support for em, and they're easy to work on/mod).

I still think it's one of the best reels they ever made. That 50 sized CU/CH/Core/MG7 should have never left. I know the 70's and the MGL are better on paper, but nothing beats the feel of those reels in the hand for me.

Great reels. Still light by todays standards and they have plenty of upgradeable spools for folks into the BFS thing. I use mine for an all purpose jig and plastics reel. Never has let me down in 4 years.

I have a core I would like to put the 7.7 gears in. Looked at the tackle trap and didn't see them. Where can I find them?
