Metanium MGL vs. Chronarch Ci4+

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Metanium MGL vs. Chronarch Ci4+

Post by Big-Bass » Wed Nov 30, 2016 11:44 pm

How do these two reels compare? One is basically half the price of the other according to U.S. prices at most retailers. The Chronarch got an EC award here on TT and the original Metanium also did well. I am looking at adding one to my Poison Adrena 72M. Any/all detailed help would be helpful. Thank you!

Good question. Are three more bearings, and a .3 oz weight savings, worth another $150?

The MGL casts farther. Has a newer version of the SVS infinity brakes. I will be using my Ci4 more in the winter though because the composite body is warmer to palm in the cold.

Funny how we notice little things like warmth when it turns cold.
I fish with Hot Hands warmers in my gloves.

I dont have Met MGL, but Met 13 HG use for 2 years and can compare with Chronarch CI4+ 151 HG. Both reel work with minnows on rods: Shimano Zodias 1610M-2 and Poison Adrena 172MH-2. Met have micromodule gears and feels more "butter", when you use it. Met's 6 brakes give you delicate tuning of SVS than 4 of Chronarch, or if we talking about MGL - there is new SVS with 4 brakes, but anyway cast farther. Met more comfortable for me in hand, may be it smaller that Chronarch. In your case for your Poison Adrena 72M, I definitely would choose Met.

like loafer, I have the 13met and CI4. If you search CI4 vs 13Met you will find many posts. I think the summary you will get is that many guys did not like the "feel" of the CI4. No one that I can recall stated with data the Met performed better. I actually like the CI4 every bit as much for something like a chatterbait.

all reports say the MGL a bit nicer then the 13Met.

For the rods you post, the new Curado 70 comes to my mind. I am seeing guys who like the CI4 opting down to the Curado 70.

And the Met MGL with that new spool and braking system is going to fare very well in its eventual review too! :-$

ChCi4+ also uses Micromodule gears. Spent a summer fishing with it and was a great reel for the price. Not ideal for light weight jigs, but anything more than 3/8oz is its sweet spot.

As frank said the mgl can throw a wider range of baits. It is a great reel and your adrena deserves the mgl. Use mgl's on all my adrenas except one which I have a conquest on. Honestly if you have an mgl you have no reason to look for another reel for a while.

For the price of what you can get the Ci4 for now, I would jump on it. I had a 15DC, but I couldn't get used to the long nose of the reel. When I fished with Chad Morgenthaler, at the time all he used were the Ci4s and they were nice to throw.

The Chronarch Ci4+ does not use micro module gearing.

In my hands, the MGL is clearly superior. The casting distance is better with less effort, and feels more controlled with the MGL. Not saying the Chronarch is a bad reel at all, but it's just not an apples to apples comparison in my opinion.

The Tackle Trap is also moving out last remaining stock of the Chronarch Ci4+ at $185 shipped each in case anyone wants to grab a few before they're gone!

There is no micromodule gear in Chronarch CI4+. If you dont believe me, may be official Shimano web will convince you: http://fishing.shimano.co.jp/product/reel/3512

I am looking forward to MGL review. By now the only thing we have known is the casting distance for MGL has been improved at least around 5~10% depends on the bait.
