Help me to pick a spinning reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Help me to pick a spinning reel

Post by Cracker » Tue Aug 09, 2016 3:43 am

I'm looking to order a spinning reel ( Ignis Type-R or 2016 Certate) for my new St. Croix ES610MLFX rod.
That reel I'm going to use in general for dropshot, shakyheads, and occasionally, when we go to camp, for trout fishing in mountain creeks.
Lines - 6-7-8lb fluorocarbon and 4lb for trout; 10lb braid with a leader, if I won't like that fluorocarbon setup.
Can't figure out the ideal size from these three which would be perfect for my needs.

2003H 75cm 5.6 180g 2lb-170m 3lb-100 m
2505 72cm 4.8 195g 4lb-140m 5lb-100m
2505H 84cm 5.6 195g 4lb-140m 5lb-100m

2505H should be great for DS; shakyheads - not really sure which one, and trout- I guess 2505, because of the smallest IPT.
At same time, I can a little bit underspool 2505H and that will make IPT lower.
Anyway, another "headache" how to spend hard earning money on a premium Daiwa reel :D

I recently got a ignis type r 2505H that im using with 6lb fluoro. I haven't used it for drop shotting yet, have thrown small senko, 3 inch spark shad weightless. Very smooth and casts light baits with fluoro very well. Plus it looks pretty good paired with Compile-X Spinning rod.

i have that same rod, since i got it in june it has had a certate 2000 on it, which was a really good combo, though its not a super light rod and the reel is heavy, it balanced pretty well.

today i put my ignis type-r 2505 on it, it balances right where my index finger hits the foregrip (i hold the reel between my pinky and ring fingers) feels much lighter, like the reel was made for the rod! handled a 35# carp in some pretty heavy current this morning, as well as a bunch of nice smallies and a decent flathead.

i generally prefer the 2000 size daiwas over the 2500, but the ignis is light enough to get the 2505 and not look back (plus the 2003 is SUPER shallow!) as for the reel itself, i really like it, super smooth, good drag, its like a light certate. i have 5 certates (all 2000/2004 models) and while i dont have a 2016, the ignis is just as nice as my 2013.

Thanks to everyone who replied!
Picked the Ignis 2505H.
For trout fishing I'll buy a different reel in 1003 or 2004 size.
