Shimano Metanium MgL came in today ....
Reel came in via Japan tackle .... My first thoughts are that its a beautiful sparkly silver color and the spool with the drilled holes throughout the spool is a nice weight reduction . It is beyond smooth I mean it's smoother than the current metanium and I love my current metanium . There's also a bearing on the spool now unlike the standard current version . I can't wait to use it this week and I will post my results and impressions on the water . I am impressed and more than satisfied so far it's awesome

I have had mine for a month or so, I love it.
Casts great and I would say it rivals the conquest in smoothness of retrieve. Heads and shoulders above old metanium.
I think the spool bearing on the shaft with the spring (like aldebaran) makes them cast better. I think the slight amount of pressure that the spring applies to the spool allows you to use less brakes. All around this is one smooth reel. I'll be picking up another soon.

Does the spool bearing have a spring on it to reduce vibration? S3D spool perhaps?

The bearing there is for the S3D. Probably contributes to the extra bit of smoothness(3 bearings to support the spool shaft) Ive contemplated removing it. I think any casting increase is due to the new brakes and mgl spool. I agree, the new mgl is at least as good as the 13.MaxZmus wrote:Does the spool bearing have a spring on it to reduce vibration? The silent tune has a spring under each bearing. I believe it is to reduce vibration.

what line are you running??..any issues with line capacity??...
Re: Shimano Metanium MgL came in today ....
I look forward to seeing MgL to 13 comparisons over the next year. Several months ago I filled my final open spot with a 13 simply because of line capacity, spool interchangeability with my other 13s and ease of service in the 13. Will be interesting to see if the MgL performance outweighs these drawbacks in a variety of conditions and lures. Certainly looks like a killer reel and I'm sure it is.

dangit. reading this im tempted to sell my NIB 13 Met and purchase an MGL.

I will be on the water with it tomorrow to get a better feel for the reel and its casting variables . A variety of lures is my main goal to test the distance and ease of distance . To be honest the retrieve feels like the new conquest, buttery and even more buttery under load . A very refined feel , smooth to another level in my opinion . Pairing it with a levante Diablo spec -r, should be a match made in heaven .

Does the MGL have the micro module gears?
Re: Shimano Metanium MgL came in today ....
From the Japan Tackle web page :- http://japantackle.com/casting-reels/sh ... m-mgl.html
"The micro module gear system provides amazing smooth gearing. Pinion and master gear has twice the number of gear teeth than previous models, to drastically reduce the gearing noise."
