Reel for 1/2-2oz lures

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Reel for 1/2-2oz lures

Post by zalan » Mon Apr 11, 2016 12:30 am

Hi,
yet another which reel to buy topic. I'm set on my bass lineup, but I need a light pike reel as well. We do not really have big pike here so I plan to throw smaller pike lures in the range of 1/2-2 oz range. Most of them will be around 1 oz I believe. What size of a reel would you recommend for that? I'm mainly a Shimano guy and here in EU the Calcutta 201D has a very good price compared to other reels so I'm thinking about getting one. Do you think it is a good size for that? Can it handle this range in the long run without any durability issues? Any other size is not sold in EU and would need to order from overseas which would increase the cost a lot, like 50%. Also could pick up a Curado 201 I, but I like the round reels better. The 300 size seems a bit big on line capacity and I'm not sure I need it.
Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Not a specific model recommendation but you can use a 100 sized reel without any issues as long as you are fishing with braid. It's been my experience that pike are among the least "line shy" fish out there. I usually use 30-40lb braid with a 12" leader and a 100 sized shimano has plenty of capacity and drag. I usually only go to a bigger reel for swimbaits and then only for the line capacity to prevent cast offs.

The 200 sized Calcutta will hold plenty of line even if you choose to fish with Mono.

If you have a good price and like the round reel 200D would be a very good reel for fishing pike, I mostly use my conquest 200 with #50 braid. For casting from shore the 100 model with #30 or #40 would do the job, if you intend to troll with it I would take the 200.

Correct me if im wrong, but I think that the major flaws of thoses usdm D model is that you cannot adjust external brake without unscrewing and opening the reel. Not sure but I think that the 100-200 JDM model have an access for the brake, but my 400 jdm doesnt.

Maybe that could explain the turn off on and lower price on theses reels, but besides that they are really smooth on the retrieve and are solid reels.

Thanks, I already has 101HG Calcutta Conquest for Bass, I might try it until I get a dedicated pike reel. It seems so little for the job

What I'm looking at is the EU version which is I do not know if it looks like the JDM or the USDM version. Shimano only sells the 201D here in EU. I can get it for 200€ locally and even on the cheaper JDM sites I have never seen it under 225€, but if I have to order from Japan, I will have at least 30%+ in customs and VAT, so it will be significantly more expensive. For that difference I might not want to go JDM, I do not care about the adjustment. I'm in the set and forget camp regarding VBS so it is no issue for me.
Edit: Trolling is not allowed in my country, so only casting from shore or boat.

Best bang for the buck, but not shimano, would be a Tatula HD. Different gear ratios available, a lot of line capacity and cast's a mile from 5/8 to 4 Oz...
As example, from France or germany for around 165 to 175, shipping included... No taxes?!?

I use, and adore, a Calcutta 201DC for this purpose. It is paired with a Megabass X4 Destruction...killer combo for pike.

A shimano 200 size reel is enough for Northern pikes. Even a 50 size will do the job fine.

It's not the fish who demands a big reel - it's the Lure size...

Thanks Guys! I will get a 200 size reel, probably the 201D.

I live in EU/Denmark, where I use the Calcutta 201D for pike fishing. It can easily handle 1/2-2 oz lures and will serve you well. The 300 and 400 size reel has also been for sale in EU/DK but for 1 oz lures you will not need them. As others have stated - the larger reels - and their increased line capacity - are only really needed to prevent cast/break offs when throwing 2+ oz lures. When throwing "smaller" pike lures I use 0.20-0.35 mm braided line and for bigger baits I use 0.35+ mm braided line.

True --- some pike/muskies lures, eg. large double bladed inline spinners, certainly call for very robust reels...

Thanks! The biggest lure I'm going to throw is the Svartzonker McMy Tail which is around 50g, a bit less than 2 oz.

The McMy is no problem for the 201D. Nice lure for slow and shallow fishing. You may want to use slightly thick line e.g. 0.35 mm for the 50g lures...

Do you use braid when it is that thick or just go mono? For smaller lures it would be strange to use 0.35mm braid, it is very strong.
