Shimano Metanium 13, 15, 16, DC?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Shimano Metanium 13, 15, 16, DC?

Post by Cyacnba » Thu Mar 10, 2016 4:35 am

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about getting a Metanium in the 8.5:1 gear ratio, left handed. However, I noticed that there are several models, and they all have great reviews. My question is, for flipping, which Metanium (13, 15, DC, 16) would you recommend based on your experiences? Also, where can I buy one at the lowest possible price besides the classifieds? I'm looking for the JDM Metanium unless the American one is the same.

Thank you in advance.

You dont need DC for flipping/pitching, but its nice to pitch with for sure. You will be fine with the 13Metanium. Mostly thumb control for pitching anyway.

Sorry, I meant just pitching, not flipping.

You don't need a DC. I HAVE 2 13 Metaniums. One on a Loomis NRX 893 and will put the other on an incoming Kistler Z Bone LE for the same: pitching.
Buy all my reels from Japan. JAPAN LURE SHOP, Japan tackle, and DIGITAKA. Quick shipping , great prices and no issues.

The 13mets are about all gone in Japan. I just bought one and went a US route. PM me if you can't find something.

the 13met xg is perfect for what you want as long as you like braid. I love mine but found it does better with braid then heavy FC

Thanks so far! Yeah, I've been looking at the Japanese websites for the 13 Metanium XG, but they are all out of stock... knowing that I could have bought a new JDM Metanium for less than $300 is killing me. I'm still looking for one for less than $300 with no luck so far.
Also, I'm hoping to sell my other reels to purchase this JDM haha. So far no success

Well the yen has went up recently. Jdm prices went up by about $20 as a result

Here you go bud... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7T ... 1_3&sr=8-3

BTW, I love my '13 Metanium. You will not be disappointed, especially if you are putting it on your new NRX 803c like I did.

Thanks! Is that the JDM Metanium? How can you tell which one is JDM or American?

no difference in JDM and US on this reel that I know. Only difference is you could buy them in Japan cheaper with no warranty because of the currency exchange situation.

Well Shimano may have drawn me back in with this new 16 Metanium. I think it looks world's better than the 13. I also like the idea of 4 blocks vs 6,simply because it's less monkey crap to fiddle around with and I'm all about simplicity.
So I'm still looking for a reel to use primarily with 1/16 Oz jigs and 3 to 4 inch paddle tails. Never held a Metanium let alone used one. How does the 13 and DC handle 3/16 Oz? Are we thinking the 16 may be better with the addition of a lighter spool? Any feedback is appreciated :D. Don't be mad Booty

Like said, there is no difference, but yes, that reel would be coming straight from Japan.

I do not consider a Met to be a finesse reel yet it has many qualities a good finesse reel would have. I throw a total weight rig of about 1/4oz most of the time with 30# braid and I can cast a mile with this. 1/16oz jigs is another world.

As good as the met performs with 1/4oz and braid, I put on some stiff FC line and the casting performance dropped down to good not out of this world levels. I think I if I wanted to fish 1/16 oz I would try the Alde.

I agree. If you are pitching 1/16 to 3/16 I'd get the Aldebaran.
