Daiwa Steez 103HL, lightest weight to cast?

Post by GAMEOVER » Tue Mar 01, 2016 7:18 am

What's the lightest weight any of you are casting on your Daiwa Steez? I never usually go under a 1/4 oz but have some 1/8 oz Heddon Teeny Torpedos im wanting to throw this spring on this reel spooled with #12 Sunline Natural.

Hope it can handle it, guess well see.

How low have you gone?

You may consider replace the stock spool by a light and shallow one.

I didn't have much success with those weights. The good news is there are plenty of spool options that would work along with a proper rod capable of loading 1/8 oz.

Replace the spool?? Are you serious? This Steez spool is fantastic.. Is there an aftermarket one I don't know about?

How low in weight have you Steez owners gone?

..I'm really itching to hit them topwater in a month or so.

Why not, depends on your intended use of the Steez, you have many options in spools.

You can easily go down to 1.7 grams with proper BFS spool

You'll need the right rod to cast 1/8. Add a shallow spool and you'll be amaze at the distance and accuracy when casting the lure. Not to mention it won't take much effort to cast that 1/8 lure.

Yes the stock spool is nice. But if you want to cast very light lures particularly, you have better choice.
I've tried the the stz 109 spool reviewed here:
http://www.tackletour.com/reviewdreamfishingpg2.html

The lightest lure I've tried to cast is the trout magnet, with a tiny worm plus a 1/64 OZ jighead, the total weight on scale is 0.85 gram, although the cast feeling is not so nice, it is still castable and the distance is about 15 meters (measured by a tape).

And trust it or not, I have got a unbelievable distance when cast a 3.25 gram plam mini jig, which is 48.5 meters.

With the 103 spool, I can cast 3/16 oz plus the plastic which probably is around 1/4 oz. Fluoro can be a little tough to manage but nothing a long cast every now and then won't help. With the SV 105 spool,I can cast 1/8 oz plus plastic. It handles flouro a little better.
