Inexpensive reel for hardbaits

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Inexpensive reel for hardbaits

Post by cornmuse » Sun Feb 14, 2016 1:42 am

I have an older 6'6" medium rod that has a great action for fishing smaller crankbaits & jerkbaits weighing around 3/8 ounce - perfect for creek smallies from my canoe. I'm looking for an inexpensive reel to put on this rod to use it with 10lb fluoro for general shallow hardbaits. Right now I'm leaning towards a Shimano Casitas as my best choice. I'm also considering
possibly an ABU Revo S (concerned it might not like the lower weight range I'm focused on). I'd like to keep the cost under $150 MSRP and with the Bass Pro trade in the Abu nets to $104. With a $50 BP gift card, it sure would be nice to put this outfit together with just a few Jacksons out of pocket. I'd love to hear some thoughts about these two reels - pros and cons. Thx.

Because crankbaits have a lot of surface area to catch the wind compared to their weight, I'd recommend a reel with externally adjustable brakes, so you can tune it easily for different cranks and different wind conditions.
