Scored a M St. Croix Rage 6'10 casting rod cheap what reel?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Scored a M St. Croix Rage 6'10 casting rod cheap what reel?

Post by KDogg14 » Sun Jan 31, 2016 7:17 am

So, I went into Dick's today and I had $50 in gift cards to use so I looked around and I saw a St. Croix Rage 6'10 M casting rod rated for 1/8 - 5/16 for 100 bucks so I said why not then it was marked down another 25% so I got this for $25! I'm leaning towards a Daiwa SV 105. I'm going to put 15 pound braid with a 12 pound flour leader? Any other suggestions reel wise?

I'm a big fan of the ergonomics of those rods. Nice and light and balanced as well. I like your reel choice. TDZs and 50 sized Shimano reels pair nicely as well.

I used to have that rod. I used a Pixy with 7lb Sniper for light topwaters and small 3-4" swimbaits with 1/8oz head. The Alphas SV would be a sweet reel for that rod.

The Rage's are nice rods. I have 3, 2 casting and 1 spinning.
I have the RC7'2MM that I have paired with an EXO 5:3:1. Great great combo for 1.5 squarebills and rattle baits to 5/8
I have the RC71MHXF for bottom contact baits. Beast of a rod but not super sensitive
I also have the RS610MXF paired with a Abu Soron STX. Great rod for light weight or weightless plastics. I'm really surprised at the sensitivity of the rod. Most of the time I'm using straight fluoro or braid with a fluoro leader

Overall the Rage rods surpassed my expectations. I was a little hesitant on getting them but I'm really glad I did.

Right now at stcroix.com you can get a few models of the Rage for $89 shipped with a free Rage hat.

The alphas sv would be perfect now or you could wait and see how curado/scorpion 70 is later.

Can the SV 105 throw a 1/8 oz slider head and a weightless trick worm well?
