Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Saltiga 3500 for freshwater?

Post by Hyaweh » Mon Sep 07, 2015 3:09 am

So I was wondering, the new Saltiga spinning reel 2015 are coming out in the 3500 size which is about 4000 size in shimano. My question is, can I use this reel for freshwater tackle for bass or such? Or is it way too overkill and it'll rip that bass' mouth off?
I initially plan on buying it for light tackle and some saltwater fishing if I ever get the chance to.Do you think it'll be a good idea to put this reel on a shimano Crucial, if I ever decide to buy the reel?

Spinning reels are generally much heavier than casting reels. Now you've got an even bigger and more heavy spinning reel to fish with all day. As long as the weight doesn't bother you then I don't see any reason why you couldn't use a larger spinner for freshwater bass fishing. I've actually heard of guys fishing larger spinning reels in thick weeds for extra torque to pull the fish out of the salad.

Saltiga 3500 = Shimano 5000 in size. Way too big for most freshwater fishing but nice for heavy inshore fishing.

I have a good friend that only uses spinning tackle and his setup for heavy baits is a 7' mh clarus spinning rod with a 4000 size reel. A little too big for my taste, but i only use spinning for lighter stuff.

The new Saltiga 3500H weighs 455 grams. If you want power in a smaller package, look at the Morethan 3012H, weighs 280 grams.
