Reel confusion

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Reel confusion

Post by Bigguy » Sat Aug 15, 2015 9:29 am

I am. Looking to either upgrade my jig rod reel (17# flouro docks /lay downs/med weeds with 3/8-1/2) or the reel I use for jerkbaits / medium cranks. The jig reel I would go met or new steez (but do they have the line capacity/is the new steez even in the mets league?). I would be upgrading a tat type r.

For the jerkbait reel I am thinking chronarch 150 or sv 105 w 10# flouro. I would be upgrading a curado 200e.

Which is the bigger upgrade, and which reel is better for the better upgrade? I am only getting one reel . I throw jigs a lot more thanjbaits or cranks.

Thanks for the input!

IMO any one of those 4 reels will be fine jig or jerk bait reels. You ask can the steez compete with the met? Are you kidding? The steez is one of the finest reels ever made. I have and love both. The only reel I don't have is the ci4. The alphas sv is incredible for the money, but not as refined as the steez or met.

Any Daiwa reel with a 103 or bigger spool will handle more than plenty of 17lb fluoro, even a 105 size spool could hold it's own for awhile. No issue with line capacity for sure. Either reel would be an upgrade to the Tat, and if you wait for the new Steez SV you will have one of the best production reels made. I use a Steez 100HLA with SV spool and it is insane what the spool can do without backlashing.

If I go with the steez, I am leaning toward waiting for the sv steez.

I have an Alphas SV105 that I have been using for my Jerkbaits. I run 10# Hybrid on it. I've never felt that I had any issues with line capacity on it. Depending on the size of your jigs and line, it could work as well. For cranking though, the 7 gearing will be a bit much in my opinion.

I run 17# Mustad and or 17# McCoy on my TD-Z 103 and Steez 103 spools...plenty of capacity. Great Bottom Contact reels.
