Best Palming Reel?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Best Palming Reel?

Post by Nevrsumma » Mon Aug 10, 2015 8:29 am

I'm sure this topic has been covered before, but I am curious to hear all your opinions. What would you consider the best palming reel on the market?
I would have to say the most (palmable?) reel I have had the chance to fish with is the 15 Aldebaran 50 HG. Coming in a close second would be my steez'. I have not had a chance to fish many of the other 50 size shimano iterations of the alphas range of Daiwas, but I am very interested to hear what you guys think. Thanks!

I like the Pixy frame for palming. Just finally used a PXR this weekend and it's a really nice reel.

The Shimano 50e series get my vote.

Toss up between the Aldebaran BFS XG or the new Aldebaran 50

Shimano 50e style reels
Daiwa T3s
Shimano Metanium (new style)
Zillion/TDZ style
Steez

Those are my favorites that I have used.

It is all personal preference though. Buy and try as many reels as you can.

I think it highly depends on the size of one's hands. If you have bear paws the smaller reels may not be very comfortable or somewhat awkward. I'm the polar opposite and have lady like mittens. 50 E and Alphas are what I find most comfortable. Tdz and Zillion would be 2nd. The T3 and Steez / SS are nice as well, just a touch wide. Chronarch 100 and Excense DC I found a little too tall.

For me the most comfortable reel to palm and fish with is the TD Zillion. It just fits my hand better than any other reel I have, including my Curado50.

Stronlgy agree with everyone who mentioned a Shimano 50 size. I think the Aldebaran 50 palms just ever so slightly better than the BFS XG because it sits so low.

Metanium for second place, and if you prefer something larger.

Alphas or Pixy for me. I have small hands. I have no complaints with the Steez, Old Zillion, or TDZ platforms either. They all fit my hands pretty well.
