Best cranking finese baitcaster

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Best cranking finese baitcaster

Post by Jaw1 » Mon Jun 15, 2015 2:01 am

I have limited myself to a $250 reel budget and a $200 rod budget. I currently have 2 50e curados and 1 core 50 size reel. I was looking at the 50 size chronarch but have been thinking about a jdm reel just to try out. So if you could only pick 1 which would it be? Shimano alde, scorpion, or diawa pixy or alpha. I have never owned any jdm reels but have read a lot about them but just not sure. This would be used for small crankbait applications up to around 8lb line lure weight probably will not be lighter than a #5 shad rap or so

I currently use a Pixy Type R and a JDM PX68 SPR for UL/L cranking. They get attached to a Megabass X7 F2.5-66X7 and a GLX CBR 841. Love them to death both use Hedgehog BFS Air Bearings. Got my SPR out for the first time last week and it was on par if not better than my Tuned Type R. The SPR in theory is specifically designed for UL/L crankbaits SPR = Small Plug Revolution. I would love to try an 2015 Aldebaran but have no reason to justify buying one at the moment. The latest Aldebaran may be just slightly out of your price range but for under $250 you can still get JDM Pixy or an Alphas SV. I've not had the pleasure of using an SV spool yet but guys rave about them.

The PX68 and SPR variant are pretty much out of stock in Japan but you can get the SPR really cheap on ebay. Simmons Sporting Goods puts up 2 per week for bid. They go for about $200-$225 which is a steal for that nice of a reel in my opinion.

I do a lot of fishing with small plugs. I especially like the Griffons as they will catch ANYTHING!

Prices are excellent on JDM reels ordered directly from Japan. I just yesterday ordered the 2015 Aldebaran HG from Digitaka for $267 shipped. Also from JPangler I have a Scorpion 1000XT coming for $149.12.

Try the Tackle Trap for a JDM Jackson Bastard rod for less than $200 or the Trickster( which i have in 6'3" LM FOR $268)
Fantastic rod!

Check other Japan shops such as Japan Lure, Japan Tackle.

Now is the time to get your JDM Reels from Japan with exchange rate so favorable.

I prefer to buy my rods in the states: tackle Trap (Gary and Brian) has fantastic service. The Orochi XX series is just a little out of your range but you can consider them also.

I'm sure others will chime in with great suggestions for you! Good Luck on your search!

If you can find a Yumeya spool for one of those Shimanos you have you're dialed in. A Daiwa Ss SV or Alphas SV would work too.

I'll look around for the spool you recommended also. Not hard to figure out I'm new to the jdm thing and reel upgrades in general. I didn't have a clue about this stuff until recently and can see the obsession growing already.

It's the 32 mm spool. With 1 brake on I can cast anything on it with no thumb till the lure hits the water.

I think getting a used pixy 5:8 would be the ticket, especially for the price range and cranking.. the 5:8 gears are good for it. If you are wanting something new, I would suggest the alphas SV 5.8.

This is the truth. I love that spool. I have an extra for sale if you go that direction :big grin:

I agree with getting a finesse spool for one of the 50's. I have had a great experience with avail spools as well. Got mine from hedgehog studio.

Really glad this post was made. I too am wanting a finesse baitcaster and the Yumeya spool for my Curado 50e might be the answer I was looking for.
