ultimate heavy pitching reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

ultimate heavy pitching reel

Post by reddragon » Mon Apr 20, 2015 11:45 am

Hey guys I'm just wondering what everyone is using to punch or pitch heavy 1-2oz tungstens?? Right now I'm using my 2010 premier with the skeet revo handle upgrade and it works great with a lot of leverage with the handle. What do you guys use and why do you like that reel with these heavy tungstens??

You could pitch heavy tungsten on an old knucklebuster where the spool doesn't disengage from the gears. The weight makes all the nuance and mystique that goes in reels that pitch light baits well irrelevant. I pitch heavy with a 200 size Shimano. It doesn't really require anything special aside from solid build and good components- and that is geared toward getting the fish out, not getting the bait to the fish.
High gear ratio might be the only critical factor for me. Although it is not a great pitching reel, I smoked my buds in a 'first to 10' pitching competition just because the 8.1 gears in my Excense DC got me an extra pitch for every 4 they made. Beat out two equally skilled guys solely on percentages alone... \:D/
Any of the high gear jobbies should do, Shimano XG, Revo Rocket, etc.

Shimano curado 201e7. It just feels super solid, it can hold up to punching heavy weights.

Another vote for Zillion. Probably the sturdiest low profile reel ever built. Thing is a tank

Currently a 50th Zillion.

I like a fast retrieve and a strong drag. I believe those are two key things to have in a punching reel.

I have a Daiwa Z200 on my punching rod, this reel is the cat's meow. Big brother to the Zillion. It's heavy, but balances well on my MB SRD. Own the grass.

I'm surprised I don't own one zillion reel yet. I've been on these forums just reading good things about zillions, but never picked one up. I think it has to do with the fact that I start out with light reels and the zillions weight turned me off. There's been times when I almost clicked the buy button or sent a pm on classifieds but I don't know why I couldn't do it. Maybe my next reel will be a zillion.
