Son wants a low profile casting reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Son wants a low profile casting reel

Post by walli » Sun Sep 21, 2014 11:58 am

I have a son who is showing interest in learning to use a baitcaster. Ive always owned round reels but am wondering if a low profile would be better suited for a novice. Also, all my reels are right handed and he wants a leftie. Budget is up to $200. What do you fellows suggest?

I'd suggest a lews tournament pro.a very small user friendly bait cast reel & it has dual braking systems that would allow him to try out both styles of braking.can be had for $150 on eBay or about the same price during major online sales

Shimano Chronarch 51E was the first that comes to kind for me. Smaller, easy to dial in...sub $200

How about a Daiwa T3-1016HL? TW has a lefty in a 6.3:1 ratio for right around $200. Great spool, holds a decent amount of line and only weighs 6.5 oz. In addition, the Daiwa Tatula and the Tatula Type R are both under $200.

Any Curado 201, or Daiwa Zillion can be had within your price range. If you get a Zillion there are many spool upgrade options as he sharpens his skills.

Tons of good choices out there. Curado, Zillion, T3 etc. Go with what fits his hand the best. For the price that TW has the T3's for right now it will be hard to beat.

Shimano Curado or Chronarch gets my vote.

I have a few of the HTSA daiwa advantage reels and their unbeatable for price and performance. The reel is solid casts very well and is very cheap. They are a little large in frame and a tad heavy but as a first low profile reel it would be an unbeatable value.

I'm going to go a different direction and rec some "oldies". Very good condition TDZs can be had now for around $150, and the Fuego in the $100 range. Curado 100Ds are nice as are the CH MG50s, if you can find them. Daiwa Sols and Alphas are also good starter platforms, and you may be able to locate some original Scorpion 1000s and even the newer Scorpion XTs in your price range.

Good luck.

Is website for TW out of date? The website reflects that they have the 6.3:1 T3 in a lefty but they're out of the 7.1:1. I haven't called to confirm.

My daughter has been using Zillions and Steez that I dialed in for her since she was 8. I got some Tatulas and she likes them but prefers my Steez. ](*,) ](*,) She mainly throws moving baits so she has less issues. She uses spinning gear for bottom contact baits.

I like all these choices, but I would also add the Curado 51E to the list.
