Mid-Low Spinning reel options

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Mid-Low Spinning reel options

Post by FishEastCarolina » Tue Sep 09, 2014 4:54 am

Looking for a spinning reel to accompany a 7-0 ML Abu Garcia Volatile. I would like to keep the reel in the $50-$70 range if possible. I havent had much experience with any spinning reels outside of a few Penns growing up, and my current two cheapies
(penn fierce/ okuma stratus GT). Outside of freshwater application this reel would see light saltwater, and I typ wash my reels after the occasional salty trip.

I was looking at these options thus far:
Daiwa Exceler-HA
SHimano Sedona FD
Abu Garcia Orra S

Any suggestions, I'm not opposed to BPS/Cabelas house offerings nor do I have any real brand descrepancies.

From those three I would pick the Exceler. I have the three brands, all are good but Daiwa spinning reels are nicer.

Usually $100. Very good reel and a steal at that price. I've bought from there several times and they've always been perfect.

If you can pick up a Daiwa Aird spinner for your budget they are tremendous value for such a light reel. Come with a spare spool too.

If you don't mind buying Chinese and aren't in a rush this is a great reel for the money:

Was sold in the US as the Evercast Forge for like $110 for a while.

I will second that daiwa spinners, especially in the mid range tend to be a lot nicer. If you can shop one in your price range I would definitely look at the daiwa tierra/advantage. The tierras have performed excellently for me as a cross over from salt to fresh water. It has a waterproof-ish drag and a "washable design".

another reel which might be interesting may be the pflueger arbor, it has a bigger spool for supposed casting distance, my main interest in it would be for line manageability for stiffer mono and fluorocarbon. I have never tried it but it looks good for about 80-90 dollars.

In the range.your looking, you can't go wrong with the pflueger President. Solid reel, excelent drag, and durable.

I was going to mention the pflueger president series too, but he did say it would see light salt water use.

If you can swing the extra $25-$30 for a Daiwa SS Tournament, do it. You won't be sorry 8-)
