Calais 100s on that auction site scammer

Post by DUZBASS » Mon Mar 03, 2014 2:59 am

anyone else see the calais 100a on auction going for over $500 with reserve not met?? :-k

a quick completed listings search shows this guy and another with multiple listing in the $500+ range that the reserve wasnt met at over $500...

I am pretty sure they are ghost bidding to artifically increase the going prices or catch some idiot that wants it more if it is bidding that high ](*,)

i've been following all of the calais 100A auctions for a few months now, including the one you're referencing. for a BNIB one, i think the price he finally got—$545 on his third try—is not out of the question. original MSRP was $399.99 price but, $45 in sales tax, $40 in ebay fees, $12 in paypal fees, and $15 for shipping with insurance. add in your time and effort and risk, it's in the ballpark.

i recently got my calais 100A on that auction site for a sweet price (and i mean sweet because it wasn't listed properly and no one looking for one would've found it)...it was used and grimy but in excellent condition with only the tiniest of light surface scratches. i sent it off to e_bassfisher for cleaning and polishing...got it back and put on a 90mm avail handle with six ball bearings and, man oh man, i'm a happy camper.

Dunno how trustworthy the sellers are, but there are LOTS of nice JDM reels on Ebay from oversees...many at better prices than the domestic counterparts sell for...

I follow them all, as well...I'm guessing him or his buddies ran the price way up, just short of an obnoxious reserve price...They have been getting a premium, though, compared to pre-discontinuation prices..

If you see it, report it. Ebay does not actively looking for scammers. Even if it does not concerns you directly, it might save you butt or someone you know in the long run. Just fyi, ebay does have ip tracking so they'll look into the bidding record if someone reported it.

Normally I would say maybe, but the repeated auctions that ended without the super high reserves met is very fishy  I mean I suppose a guy could want to only make a $200 profit above retail on a reel, but it is certainly strange to expect it.

Correct me if I am wrong, Doesn't the seller have to pay an reserve fee for each unsucessful attempt? Which is about $4-$5 a pop. Combine with the 116% ebay / paypal overhead, sounds a bit risky to make a profit margin if you ask me.

Yeah, thought so...anything over $350 even NIB sounds too high in my book.

I kept mine, an Antares AR, as I am moving other gear first.

In the end, the auction site doesn't give a rat's @$$ about anything EXCEPT their bottom line...
