13 Fishing reels????
13 Fishing reels????
Looks like a March 17th, 2014 release date? They look great, I'm guessing a Pure Fishing product? Thoughts?

Re: 13 Fishing reels????
That's going to be a tough market to crack especially with Daiwa, Shimano and Abu having their market share and loyalists.
My understanding is that the 13Fishing reels are not going to be re-branded models from one of the top three but rather something newly designed and manufactured.
It's going to be difficult to get anglers with inventories of Daiwa , Shimano and Abu reels to transition into their new reel line. IMO it's far easier to get people to try a new rod, but reels (with their staying power in our arsenals) may be another story all-together. IMO. (unless you offer Steez/Core/Calais quality and performance a half the price).
Of course I'm approaching this as one that has a rather large inventory of well maintained and functioning high end reels. If 13Fishing is targeting new anglers or those wanting to get out of entry level gear, then perhaps there is a market share to tap by offering something of exceptional value.

Re: 13 Fishing reels????
The quality of the rods at the 100$ price point is impressive, the reels will prob be the quality of academy's house brand h20 reel
Re: 13 Fishing reels????
H2O reels are cheap. By all accounts the 13 reels could be upwards of $400, ie. High end quality. I think they're trying to come in and turn heads.Yetti wrote:The quality of the rods at the 100$ price point is impressive, the reels will prob be the quality of academy's house brand h20 reel

Re: 13 Fishing reels????
Here is a look at the sideplate. (the reel is upside down in the picture, and it is a right handed reel so this is the non handle side plate)
I know, I know, it is an awful picture, but you can kidna see that there is a little slit in part of the reel. Can't tell if it is external or internal adjustment on the braking system. Maybe the slit has something to do with it whether it is a dial of some type, or it is part of a release mechanism for the sideplate release..

If you email them they'll send you some info I'm sure.
I emailed matt baldwin and he gave me some good info. Not sure if he wants it posted or not.

Re: 13 Fishing reels????
$400 is WAY TOO MUCH for an OEM reel...even ones that have "Abu" as the branding, let alone the #13.
Re: 13 Fishing reels????
Yeah, agreed. You can't come into the market and produce a low priced high quality rod and use that over and over as a pitching point and then come out with a $400 price range reel without expecting a lot of raised eyebrows. I hope the reels are solid bang for your buck reels priced like BPS reels. Anything more with no history, they better hit a home run or it could be a uphill climb. Just ask Ardent look at their old reels and now their new stuff.dragon1 wrote:$400 is WAY TOO MUCH for an OEM reel...even ones that have "Abu" as the branding, let alone the #13.
Re: 13 Fishing reels????
OEM reels are typically "designed aesthetically" by the name brand...however, the finished product is very rarely engineered, designed and tested from scratch by the same marquee.
Not to mention manufactured.
Lots of OEM reels on the market today, and I believe this trend will continue to grow.

Re: 13 Fishing reels????
Certainly would be interesting to see 13Fishing contract Daiwa to produce an aluminum body Steez in the high $200 range.
Just a bit of day-dreaming here.
