Small Nicks in Spinning Reel Spool Lip - What to do?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Small Nicks in Spinning Reel Spool Lip - What to do?

Post by BlaineFred » Mon Nov 11, 2013 10:31 am

I have a Shimano Stradic CI4...and I just noticed some very small nicks in the lip...and I don't really know what to do. The reel still casts very nicely. The nicks are very small, and hard to see, but I can feel them.

I had a cheap spinning reel some years ago that got a nick in the lip when a large catfish pulled the rod/reel into the water....(long story on how that happened, but I laid the rod down to eat some lunch)....and I sanded it out with very fine sandpaper. It worked fine after that.

I don't really want to do that with the Stradic. It's painted red, and the sanding would remove color. And a new spool is about $40, so a home repair is preferred.

I would appreciate thoughts and ideas on what to do.

Thanks,

Fred

Use a dremel tool or fine grit sand paper and sand it down lightly.
I have done several spools and they work fine.

i think your going to loose paint no matter what, but a buffing wheel and some polishing compound might do the least damage.

Like Angry says, you can't avoid loosing some colour. A light buff will be fine.

You might try a good paste wax if the nicks are small enough. You just don't want the line to catch and fray on the cast.

A small fine hobby file will work.

You could buy a replacement spool & save that one as a spare.

Thanks for the tip.

I thought about buying a spare spool last year, before I discovered the nicks.

But the $40+ price turned me off at the time. The Mag sppols are not cheap. But I may reconsider, especially because I might want to spool one with braid.

Those nicks can only get worse with time.
I rather lose some color and get them straight.
I normally do a wet sand with 600-800 grid or buff it up with dremel tool.
