Spinning reel capacity
Spinning reel capacity
How do companies decide the line capacity for spinning reels? I know some of it has to do with the type of species, and whether you are fishing salt or freshwater...on my Daiwa, for example, 185 yards of 8lb mono is wayyy more than needed for most freshwater applications. Using a smaller model will save some line, but you may sacrifice some drag. Any thoughts?

Re: Spinning reel capacity
I use backing on all my spinning reels unless I'm chasing steelies or salmon. Then it's filled to capacity with whatever line I chose for the application. A simple 6000 yard spool of BPS mono lasts a loooong time for backing.

Re: Spinning reel capacity
Look into Japanese spinning reels from Shimano/Diawa. A majority of them have a shallow spool option. Many users here including myself have them. There is tons of info here, just do a search. I use shallow spools anytime I can, including my casting reels.
Re: Spinning reel capacity
Never thought about the Japanese market for a shallow spool. I'll give that a try. thanks.
