Finesse Cranking Reel
Finesse Cranking Reel
I'm looking for a crankbait reel that will go really well with throwing light balsa baits. Nothing really more than a 6:3:1 gear ratio. Love my winch but it doesn't handle the lighter baits as much as what I want it to. I'm really thinking of going with something Daiwa doesn't matter if it's JDM or not and will probably buy something lightly used. Ballpark 200 range give or take some.
Re: Finesse Cranking Reel
Ballpark $200 and Daiwa:
Sol
Alphas
Very used or lucky find Pixy
IMO, you would have as much, if not more opportunities with Shimano in this budget range for your intended techs.

I'm open to suggestions...what would you suggest from Shimano?

Only have experience with one Shimano that would fit the bill. It is a Curado 51E. I imagine any of the 50 size reels would accomplish what you are looking to do.

Alphas Type-F = AWESOME.

Re: Finesse Cranking Reel
Chronarch 50e is a mighty nice reel and can be had brand new under $200. I actually just picked one up myself:-)
Re: Finesse Cranking Reel
Curado 100D
Scorpion 1000 (original red one)
CH SF
CU 50E as noted
CH 50 MG can be had for a little over $200
Scorpion XT can be had for a little over $200
Calcutta 50 TE
Otherwise, I honestly believe a proper spinning combo casts lighter balsa lures better than any BC/BC combo.

I can't disagree with that statement. Doubt many would. Some of us think we have to use a b/c no matter what.dragon1 wrote:Curado 100D

In my case I went from 100% spinning outfits to almost 100% b/c outfits, and rarely take more than one spinning outfit with me whenever I do get a chance to hit the water. Reason is I just like using a b/c more. I imagine as time goes by I will get past that and use whichever is more efficient for the lure weight/technique being used. Until then it is b/c all the way baby!
Re: Finesse Cranking Reel
Favorite small cranker for me is the Daiwa SOL. Feels "sturdy" and handles the cranks with "solidity."
Very fluid in casting.
Of course, the Curado 50E (and the new Chronarch 50) are excellent too. I use the 50 regularly for small squarebills.
The Scorpion 1000 was mentioned and that is a Fantastic small cranker!! I'm so glad I managed to find one and had it upgraded (it was fine like it was) Super solid!! Built like a tank. It's my "go-to" small cranker as it is scuffed up a little so I don't need to "baby" it.
And finally, also mentioned, is the old Curado 100D. Another fine classic that will hang with the best of them. I feel it was one of Shimano's best.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm going to check out the 50E a little more and definitely the Alphas type F.
I couldn't imagine fishing crankbaits with a spinning outfit it would drive me bonkers!
