Calcutta D or Lexa 300?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Calcutta D or Lexa 300?

Post by r0bling » Thu Feb 21, 2013 12:46 am

Hey guys, I just can't make up my mind on which reel I should get this year. I really want a swimbait setup but can't decide on the Calcutta D or Lexa 300. Or should I be using my T3 for swimbaits? I want to throw lures like dep silent killer jr or gan craft jointed claw 148 targeting bass and pike in Illinois. This is actually stressing me out lol. Can someone just tell me what to think?

I was in the same boat and ended up getting the Lexa 100 and buying the New Lews Super Duty aswell, sice the 100 and the Lexa 300 are the same they would both be awesome, but i have to say i like my Lews the best, its silky smooth, can hold a fair amount of line and casts a mile.

I have a Lexa 300 and can't find anything bad to say about it. Its smooth, powerful, and very precise feeling on the retrieve. Plus, it is significantly cheaper than the Calcutta D. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another 300 and have begun to look at the 100s based upon how much I like it.

Wow...quite a bit of price disparity between the two.

For the size and what you need this reel for, a "plethora" of options exist if considering the cost of a new Calcutta 300 D (I assume this is the size you want?).

I haven't seen a new Lexa yet, but I did buy a Calcutta 300D last year, and what a beast of a reel. I love it. I don't care what other people say about it...it's awesome. It comes factory set with 2 brakes on, and it's not really adjustable unless you take the reel apart, but I have no plans to change it because I'm using such heavy lures anyway.

I am very intrigued by the Lexa reels though, and I have a feeling I might end up with one soon...

Yeah, the 300. I know but I didn't want to spend more than $300 on a new reel and right now TW has 25% off all Shimano. Was the Calcutta designed more for cranking?

Thanks for your input guys! This sale on TW is pretty tempting. Still have 3 days to think this through. Decisions, Decisions..

Don't forget the Exo 300, I have handled one and it is crazy light and feels really sturdy.

One in 5.3/1 ratio would probably be awesome too.

I generally don't steer people away from their first choices but it ,might be a good option.

For swimbait fishing with big baits than get a Calcutta D 400/401 and do it right the first time. I have two 401s and a Lexa 300HL and the two reels aren't the same and why the price disparity shouldn't be in the same so conversation. The D casts farther, has more power and for a round reel is rather comfortable on the right rod. Not saying the Lexa won't work but two different leagues.

I also have the Pluton and love that reel with my 806 and Hudd 8s but the reel don't play nice with 30# mono/copolymer or the 867/908. If using 25# mono/80# braid and not the 867/908 than I'd prefer that over the Calcutta or Lexa. One super smooth awesome casting beast with on the fly break adjustments (although I don't bother) and easy quick spool changes.

As for the D both reels have all six breaks on and I cast 2 oz baits 40 plus yards on 30# copolymer line or 100# braid.

I don't know what the Depps Jr weights but if its 2 oz than the 400 should be fine and when you are ready for the big dog full size Depps 250 you'll be ready for it. Just go big. Everything else is drop shot chatter.
