Reel of the Year 2012

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Reel of the Year 2012

Post by bassbandit » Sat Dec 01, 2012 6:58 pm

In what is beginning to seem like a tradition, I want to know which reel you favored above all others this year.

For the second year in a row, my 'reel of the year' is the Daiwa Fuego casting reel. I've had a Fuego or two or three in the rotation for each of the last 5 years and continue to feel like there is little to compare. But I haven't bought a newly released reel in a couple of years.

HSTA 153 really proved it worth, countless fish and a personal best.

Second would be the Stradic FJ.

That's a tough one. I fish everything from Steez/Stella/Calais and Calcutta DC's down to Curado 50E's. They all perform very well or I wouldn't have them on my deck. If I had to pick one based on best bang for the buck, my 4 Gen2 Premier's would win that, running away. Best overall is a tough one, though. I guess I'd have to go with the Calais DC. It is so good at everything. The only drawbacks are its weight and the metal sideplates are so cold to handle in the winter. And price, of course. But that's not as big a deal on Tackle Tour as on most other sites. :D

When I hear "reel of the year 2012", I tend to think of a reel that was introduced or "upgraded" in 2012. I also think there should be price ranges. That being said, my choice for a mid range reel, introduced in 2012, would be the Abu Gen 3 STX.
