Will The Reel Deep Crankers Please Stand UP

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Will The Reel Deep Crankers Please Stand UP

Post by got2be5 » Wed Nov 07, 2012 9:15 am

Looking to purchase a dedicated deep cranking reel.As of late i have been using GPS to throw to deep structure (challenging). The reels i have, i have been just getting by with.Whats everybody using? The price range is wide open just trying not by a reel only to find out there is something better. One extreme to another, off the shelf to JDM stuff. Also how much actual performance difference is there between the Conquest and the DC version. THANS in advance JAMES

Conquest non DC are lighter & cheaper, they are equal in performance such as cranking power and gears. The difference besides the weight, cost and looks is in casting. If you want a lazy thumbs answer to the backlash beast, especially in windy conditions then the DC models will help, again mostly for lighter baits after 1/2 oz or more on up it makes less a difference. The DC systems are different and are not equal to each other. The best of the best IMHO is the 4x8 used only in the Calais. My Conquest 101DC is the latest and it is 3x8 (8 levels of sensitivity using 3 different lines, mono-braid-fluo). My Conquest 201DC is only 1x8. I hope my info helps.

Gen 2 Revo Winch. An absolute tank built specifically for throwing big, heavy deep divers with giant handle to make retrieving them a breeze. I'm sure the Gen 3 is nice, the handle isn't quite a big(95mm compared to 105mm I believe), but the bigger gear might make even easier work of DDs than the G2, although I don't have one(yet) to know for sure.

I used a Curado E5 for a couple seasons and it did a good job. I recently converted one of my Zillions to a crazy cranker and like it a lot. I also plan on buying a TDZ 100m this winter.

I have sellers remorse as I just sold my Chronarch D5. Matched with my new GLX 957 is was deep cranking sweetness, easily handled LC Flat CB20's with plenty of power to spare. Highly recommended if you can find one.

How could I have left out the Calais family!?!? The APV is a great 5.0:1 slow cranker... the 100A is awfully sweet too! Both are casting machines and smooth as butter on the retrieve.

I can't really add much to the posts above..they've given multiple great options... I'm on the Conquest 100DC kick (have been for 2+ years). If you go this route, my best advice it to put the Calc 200DC or 250DC handle on it (200/250 are same length but 250 has Septon/PG2 knobs).

Shimano Calcutta TE 200 DC paired with a Power Tackle PTC76 medium heavy glass rod with palm support. Great setup for 'the winders'. If the deep diver doesn't catch the wind, I can send that thing into orbit...

I mostly use a Calcutta 201 TE DC for deep cranks but I also use a Citica E 201 on another cranking rod and don't ever feel "under gunned" with it. Granted its no where near as smooth as the Calcutta but it will get the job done. If I were going out for a full day of deep cranking then I would go with the Calcutta no doubt.

The two reels I have been using with the deepest divers are the Chronarch 100D5 and the Calcutta 100DC. Of the two the Calcutta casts a bit further but the Chronarch feels the least resistance on retrieve. If I could choose only one I would go with the Chronarch.
