Stradic 2500Ci4 -vs- Sustain 2500FG

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Stradic 2500Ci4 -vs- Sustain 2500FG

Post by bassninja » Wed Oct 24, 2012 9:55 am

Looking for a lightweight reel to put on my Cumara CUS68MH for some Fall time smallie action. Some quick questions:

Is the Sustain FG worth the extra cost over a Stradic Ci4?
Is the weight difference between these two reels that noticeable? (8.3 oz vs 7.0 oz)

I fish both of these reels, and like them both, but to me the Sustain is worth the extra money. It just feels smoother when you have a fish on - attributable mostly to the X-Ship I'm sure, but also has 2 more BB and an aluminum frame. I like the Stradic and would not steer you away from it, but to me the upcharge for the Sustain is worth it. I don't notice the weight difference at all.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for your input. I've been debating between these two reels for a while.

While I enjoy my sustain... Sometimes I wonder if should of just got the ci4. Only reason I kept the sustain was because I got it on sale. I handled both the sustain and the ci4, and I did notice a difference in weight. Not huge but noticeable. Bottom line if u got money to spare get the sustain. What I should have done was get the ci4 save the rest of the money for a better rod.

You are right about the weight - but you really have to fish them. I am a big Shimano fan for spinning reels, so I'm not knocking the Ci4, but to me the Sustain is clearly a better reel. It should be for the extra $130 bucks, and it is.

Also depends what you use it for, I think. I notice the difference when I have a 3+ pound fish on that doesn't want to be caught. If you're targeting other/smaller species you might very well be better off with the lighter reel - because it's definitely lighter, and not a bad reel by any means.

- If you have a light rod, yes.

But the C14 will behave similarly to a plastic reel.
