Shallow Crank Reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Shallow Crank Reel

Post by Teal101 » Mon Oct 08, 2012 10:44 am

Right now I'm using a Shimano Curado 201DPV. I am moving this reel to deep cranking duties for 5xd and 6xd's. I now need a reel for my shallow crank setup. The rod is a Loomis GL2 843CBR. I run 12lb P-Line fluoro clear. Lures are mostly Rapala DT-4's and 6's, Pointer 100's, 1/2 oz traps, and misc square bills. I want something I can maximize distance when casting these light lures. The Dt-4 is 5/16oz. Core? Brand doesnt matter, trying to keep the price under $400.

The Conquest 50/1 is definitely worth a look.

Lots of good options for $400!

Agree with Gone Phishin - I like the Conquest 50/51 for shallow cranks myself, but you would have to find a used one to stay within budget.

For $400 in the JDM market I would go with the Aldebaron or Scorpion XT 1000. USDM I like the Core 50. Could also consider the "old" Steez (I don't personally like the Steez for light cranking but I know guys who do, some others here may be better able than me to give you some thoughts on this one).

Good luck with your decision.

Gen 2 Premier with Revo Extended handle is gonna be my primary cranking(shallow-mid) reel. I can cast 1/4 oz stuff easily & it's super smooth, along with being able to be had for under $200 easily these days.

You should be able to get a Calcutta 100DC for $400. They're really fun reels.

Lots of good options guys, thanks.

The Conquest would have to be a used model, it is out of the price range new. I've always wanted one, although would the 51 size be too small for 12lb line?

The Aldebaran looks sweet. Either that or a Scorpion DC...so many choices in JDM!

I have an "old" steez and dont think I would like it for cranks. Havent tested it out with lighter lures yet, but I love it for jig fishing.

The Revo Premier is high on my list. I keep seeing great things about this reel and it would save me some real $$$.

A new Calcutta would be nice...lots of great ideas to ponder on. Thanks guys. What were the reasonings for choosing the reels you did?

a lefty...

I'd look for a nice used Alphas R-edition. It will look and perform beautifully on your chosen rod. Another outstanding option would be a Chronarch 51MG - it handles light cranking duties very nicely.

Yes a lefty

BTW, those Dobyns rods are amazing. Thanks for the hookup Gary!

Since these lures don't have the resistance of a DD22 then 5:1 would probably be overkill and 7:1 may be too fast. Sounds like 6:1 is a good compromise and should be adequate for the traps. I'd use the Core 101. Cast like a dream and should have enough capacity for the typical line used with these lures. Lefty option with exotic appeal for under $400 new and under $300 used. You also have lighter spool options should you need to go that route then what the stock spool can pull off, although, the stock spool is pretty good and spares are less then $50 each. Add a 4 bearing handle if Utopia is needed. Make it 92 mm and it only gets better from there. Don't forget the Boca 7s and don't bother messing with the drags, more then adequate for your application but a cheap mod if not. The monotone charcoal look ain't too shabby, either.

Much lower than your budget but the Alphas Type-F makes a great shallow rank reel IMO.

JapanTackle lists the 50/1 as holding 80 yards of 10lb.
