what is your dream reel?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

what is your dream reel?

Post by jason41987 » Tue Mar 27, 2012 3:59 pm

if you guys had the technology and tools to take any reel in your collection, and from its design, redesign your own, personal reel, what would you start out with, and what changes would you make to make the reel you feel would be perfect?

Make the Z2020 available in 5:1 with a non-disengaging level wind plus a little brother Z1016 with the same gears, 5:1, 6:1 and 7:1. Wouldn't change a single other thing and don't dare make it of Zaion. I like my reels tough and balanced for longer rods. :)

I would take the Calais 201DC and reduce it weight to around 5 oz. or maybe the new Antares will be the one straight out of the box. Soon enough we shall see.

I've said this before but not sure how practical it would be. Take a Dell approach and let the buyer custom order what they want versus custom reels that cost an arm and a leg and it's the way that particular designer wanted it. Provide options on bearing versus bushings, where applicable. Type of Abec bearing. Gear ratio. Material like MG, aluminum or Zaion or CI4 or whatever else is brewing. Have the popular options in 100, 200 ... and so on. Synchronized or not for the bigger sizes. Heck, since they are building it from scratch then what paint job you wanted.

Not going to satisfy the masses that buy off the rack and most don't even know there's cheaper alternatives then BPS but for those who like to be different then make a market for them. Some will pay the premium for a JDM and some of those will get an ITO or MegaBass because it's supposedly suped up or just a one of a kind. Wouldn't be too hard since you keep parts on hand based on projected sales or past orders and then build them as needed. I've seen my friend take a reel apart in minutes so it can't be that laborious to put one together from scratch. They can all be built strategically from several locations although I'm going to go out on a limb and say most opting for this will want it sourced and made in Japan. It is what it is. :)

Bring back the TDZ with a 7.3:1 gear ratio, CF swept handle with cork knobs, carbonex drag, and a cool paint job like jet black or red. This way I won't have to spend a fortune doing it myself.

I'll say Aldebaran Finesse MG DC with shallow spool, micro module gearing, dc cast control, MG frame and sideplates, and x-ship....

The Z2020 has X-Ship as all the Zillions, Alphas, Sol, T3, Advantage, TDZ,...
To tell you the truth, I can't remember when was it introduced by Daiwa but for sure it was in another century :-k

For me a dream reel would be probably a Z1014HS with the weight of a Steez but the feel of the Z2020 and SW ready.
