cheap spinning reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

cheap spinning reel

Post by agggh » Sun Feb 12, 2012 5:52 pm

hey guys, Im looking into buying a new cheap spinning reel. Ill probably be buying a 6'9 ml fenwick elite tech smallie rod to throw it on. I would like a smaller reel size from 1000 to a 1500.

Ill be using this for walleye fishing, so Ill be doing a lot of vertical jigging, lindy rigs (mini carolina rigs) and slip bobbers. None of these techniques really require me to have a high end reel since I wont even be doing too much casting. Id like to keep this under a hundred dollars, closer to the 50 dollar price range.

In all honesty I dont really care what company. If anyone has reccomendations for a cheaper reel that they had no probelms with, i am all ears.

Thanks in advance

I would say the Shimano Sienna 1000. I've never used the 1000 size but I had a great time with the 2500 size.

For $29.99, it's a steal.

Pflueger Presidents have a great rep from reading around & can be had for $60 regular price. If I were to be in that price range looking for a spinning reel for that Elite Tech, that's where I'd go.

WaveSpin® ZTR Spinning, Cabelas has them for $39.99. I've got a DHXL I'll sell you if you'd like (I'm getting away from spinning gear.)

My favorite inexpensive reel was the older Exceler (not the new TSH or HA, prior to that). You might find one at an online auction for $50.

Barring that, any of the Shimanos from the $30 Sienna to the $60 Sedona are good bets. They get a little nicer as you go up each $10 and Shimano's 1000 size ahs served me well for up to 6 lb line.

The older model pflueger presidents (wood handle knob) are really nice for the money. They actually feel nicer than the new ones in the store. There on discount all over right now.

Pflueger President. If anybody knows what they're doing in the sub $200 range with spinning reels it is Pflueger. Amazing products for the price. A friend of mine beats the tar out of his President Steelheading and bass fishing, holds up great.

I second the Pflueger president. I own one and I think it is really nice.

If you look around you could get an Okuma Trio 20, thought the newer ones I have handled don't seem as nice as the ones I bought last year. Maybe it's just me.

x2 You guys beat me to it. Another one I would recommend would be the Shimano Symmetre.

A cheapo that I bought that I have been really happy with is the Abu Garcia C601 http://www.ffo-tackle.com/detail.cfm?PassProdId=3995. I have it on a 6' light action Daiwa Smallmouth series rod that I got From TW for $50, and it is a fun, capable little setup!

I have the 6'9" M-XF Fenwick smallie rod and a 1000 or 1500 size reel might be on the small side, I would go to a 2000 size. Anyway look to see if Cabelas has any of the old Tournament ZX spinning reels left, they normally go for $69.00-$79.99 but they were selling for $39.99. The reel is basically a Diawa Tierra, even Diawa is on the handle and when I checked the specs the only thing different was the lack of 2 CRR ball bearings, thats it. I have the reel, it has a neoprene coated cork knob on the handle that is comfortable but it has a level of smoothness and refinement not seen on a reel of that price and the best part is the body and rotor are aluminum, no cheap graphite bodies or rotors and that is unheard of at that price point. If you want a good reel on the cheap that is what you need to get.

I'll go one better. I have a Trion, which is toward the bottom of the Pflueger lineup. It is responsible for booting Shimano out of my arsenal years ago. Pflueger can not be touched in the mid range.

Abu Orra S is a nice one - patented one-piece metal gear box, and dual bushings/bearings in every location - most reels have single bearings. Very high tolerances for a reel at it's price. Might last a long time with reasonable care.

The new Daiwa Aird is smooth and very light for the price.
