Reel of the Year 2011

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Reel of the Year 2011

Post by bassbandit » Tue Dec 20, 2011 6:26 pm

Much like the thread I've started in the Rods forum, let's talk about your "reel of the year." What reel is the one that you reached for time and time again over the course of the year? For the sake of discussion, it can be either a casting or spinning reel.

For me, the "reel of the year" continues to be the Daiwa Fuego casting reel. Although this reel has been discontinued by Daiwa, it continues to be my favorite. For me, it has the perfect blend of power, weight, and price. It feels as powerful as the Zillion, while being as light as the Curado E Series, and palms like no other reel in it's price range. When it comes to power fishing, it is nearly perfect. I've tried several reels over the past few years while looking for its successor, but I haven't found it yet.

How about you guys?

Daiwa Steez 100 SHAs (paired on the NRXs I mentioned in the rod thread). Just a pleasure to fish....The Shimano Calcutta 100 DC needs mentioned, although more specific a it was used only for crankbaiting so not an everyday "go-to."

I bought my first lo-pro baitcaster in 1998, a daiwa, and have been fishing Daiwa baitcasters exclusively ever since(with the exception of a few bps reels). That being said, I bought my first Shimano baitcaster earlier this year, a chronarch D5. After the first day, I knew it was time to convert. It casts farther, smoother retrieve and with 2 brake pins set I couldn't backlash it if i tried. I went out and bought 4 more. No only is it the first shimano baitcaster I've owned, it's the first I've ever even fished with. I didn't want to convert, but it's happened. And I'm still not sure how i feel about it, but it's happened.
So for me, reel of the year: Chronarch D

For most of the power bass fishing that I usually do, it's two years running for the I'ZE Light 103 with the Z2020H in second place.

I'm gonna go generic and say the E series curado for me...I've gone through a few different reels this year, from abu's to quantums to these, some more expensive, some less expensive, and these are the reels that fit my style best.

It's gonna be a steez until someone makes something better. Or even close for that matter...
