Cranking Reels

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

depends on what I type of cover and crank I'm using.

You really can beat a B38 with bearing upgrades if you fishing deep. What I have found is you have to have the right rod. I use that reel for any crank 15 plus feet. I've went to a longer rod, and I still use pline floro clear line.
I have the d series curado and citica (on crucial c/b rods med and med/hvy respectively)
and the b series chronarch on a reaction cumara. All in 5.1 gear ratios.
My all around set up would be the reaction set up as I can switch from traps to billed cranks that are from shallow to 100 series sk square bill to dt10's at the top of that spectrum.
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible

I too had been searching for the untimate cranking reel. (For years actually). Until I found the Calcutta 100DC with a 200DC handle.. That sucker is a cranking machine!! It's the only Shimano I own as every other reel I own is a Daiwa.. Try one out and I really think you'll feel much the same way that I do. You will not find a reel better than it for Cranks....

I am not a cranking aficionado by any stretch of the imagination(not my favorite method of fishing and surely not a "strength" of mine), but am wondering what makes the Shimano Calcutta 100DC so different than other reels that have been mentioned? Clearly, there must be some significant difference? Interested for future reference. Thanks for all replies. =D>

The Calcutta/ Conquest DC is preferred my many(including myself) as a deep cranking reel as the spool tension can be loosened up for extremely long casts and the reel's computer will automatically control the revolution of the spool to prevent backlashing. On a windy day it will perform quite well, especially when placed on an eight foot rod.

Are the Calcutta/ Conquest the same real just the US/Japan versions?
Or are they really close?

The Conquest DC has a lefty in the 100 series, where the domestic Calcutta DC does not have a 101. There is also a big weight difference when comparing the Calcutta TE 100/01, and the Conquest 100/1...IIRC it's somewhere around 1.5 ounces.

I have 2 and would give them up unless they came out with one that weighed about 2oz less with the same gear ratio. But, you can get Winches at Cabela's for about $170. Either way you can't go wrong.
x2 Crazy Cranker Hands down.
x3 on the CC. Tank of a reel.
x4 on Daiwa Crazy Cranker
