Cranking Reels

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Cranking Reels

Post by joeim8 » Fri Jul 22, 2011 10:51 am

What is your favorite casting reel(s) for crankbaits?

I have looked at some Abu's I think the winch also the Daiwa crazy cranker and since I fish all core's I am really interested in the new chronarch 200E since it comes in a 5.5:1 left finally.

I looked forever for a shimano lowprofile casting reel in left that comes in a 5:1 for cranking and never found one so right now I am actually fishing the original chronarch that I switched the gears in th omake them 5:1.
5.5 may still be a little higher than I am use to but it may work ok.

Any opinions would really be aprreciated.
The only reason I am considering switching is because since I fish all core's it feels funny when pick up my cranking reels because the original chronarchs are so much heavier at least they feel it so if I could get something closer to the core's weight taht would be nice.

Shimano Curado 201DPV. It is a Shimano low pro, it is a lefty, it is 5.1 I have it on a Compre crankin stick. Picked it up NIB off ebay for $120 to my door. :D
I like TD-Z's

I have the winch, the E5, the 200 TE, and 100TE for cranking bass crank baits. Out of the bunch the 200 TE is tough to beat. It's so smooth and never complain. Next would be the 100TE. It's toss up between the E5 and the winch for me. I still would like to get my hand on the crazy cranker though.

Since you mentioned your use to the Core and would like to keep the weight down I would try a Revo Premier with the 5.4 to 1 winch gears. :D

Daiwa Crazy Cranker is the way to go if you like to fish cranks slow for they are only a 4.9:1 gear ratio. I have 2 and would give them up unless they came out with one that weighed about 2oz less with the same gear ratio. But, you can get Winches at Cabela's for about $170. Either way you can't go wrong.

Another vote for the crazy cranker-but I have a few old tdx's in 5.1:1.........and they do cast a little better than the zillion CC.

I don't fish cranks much but do throw 1/2 -3/4 oz spinner baits with single large Colorado blades for bass at night. I've fished the Winch and that was an awesome reel. Have thought about getting one again. I fished the CC recently but sent it back because of bad bearings and didn't feel like spending the cash to fix it or deal with warranty. I fished it for two nights and felt it was rather slow for the SB as I was using it. Probably perfect for slow cranking DD22 or slow rolling the big SB. I was waiting for ICAST to see if there were any new options. The new lefty 5.5 rebadged Curado may be just perfect. Will probably still buy another CC for when I need to really slow it down. The CC may also work great with small size swim baits to 1.5 or so oz.

Another option you may consider, especially since you are used to the Cores, is the Shimano Aldebaran Mg-L, which is 5.8:1 and 22.8" per turn (and 5 1/2 oz.).

My favorite cranking reel is the Daiwa Alpha R-Edition with ABEC 7 bearings ( I have a pair of these!) for shallow cranking and the Shimano Chronarch D5 with ABEC 9 bearings for deep cranking. I am very pleased with both of these reels thus far! =D> Tight lines, K-DOGG! :D

I do most (95%) of my cranking with a Calcutta TE DC 201. Best crank reel I've found, period. I know its heavier than what your asking for but I think if you tried one you wouldn't mind so much.
