Round reels, only?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Round reels, only?

Post by Smalleyez » Sun Jun 12, 2011 5:02 am

First off, I could never simply own round reels, but it's an interesting idea which illuminates the particular rounds reels you would choose to cover your bases.

-On the light end I'd have to have Conquest 50"s in both shallow and regular spools.
-TE100DC (of course)
-Either a Luna 103 or Ize Light (or both)
-Probably a 200 sized TE or Conquest

I'm pretty sure I could cover my bases well enough with these round reels.

Am I missing any "must haves?" :)

Morrums, in any of their iterations, be it SX, SX-Mag, Ultra Mag, IVCB, or AE74 in the 1600/1601-3600/3601 all are superb round reels.

Conquest 50. You are not complete until you own one.

You betcha!

I've come down with a bad case of DC Fever this season...I have found myself reaching for that baby more than any other reel. A domestic 101DC would be sweet, and a 51DC even sweeter.

I've had several Abu's, A Daiwa Luna 253 203 and 103, Okuma Red Isis, and a Calcutta TE 250DC....after getting the Calcutta 250DC, I don't need anymore round reels big or small. It can literally do just about everything. I've casted everything from weightless worms to crankbaits to swimbaits all with the same 14lb Super Natural. It's amazing.

Honestly, I'm just fine fishing with Ambassadeurs only...

I have 5 Ambassadeurs (5501C3, 2 5601C4's, 5001C, and a Royal Express I 4601) that I've upgraded with dual bearing levelwinds and bearing supported cogs. I've also added carbon drags to the reels without them.

I use them when I'm fishing in situations in my yak when I know the reels may get dunked or need a full relubing/cleaning after use.

Performance of these guys is on par with my low profile reels on avg. to larger lures and adequate for things like weightless trick worms.

The C3 even has a spool from a Record and the handle from a winch. It's ubber smooth and the reel i use for cranking.

As sweet as the Conquest 50 and Calcutta TE 100DC are...to me the I'ZE Light is a more "well-rounded reel". It will do just about everything, including a little bit of both of what the 50 Conquest and TE 100DC will do with a gear ratio/IPT that matches the 100DC and higher line capacity than both.

Some of the round reels that I have really enjoyed:

- Calcutta TE 100DC
- Calcutta TE 100GT
- Calcutta 250/150
- Conquest 50
- Abu Pro Max 5600
- Abu Black Max 3600
- Abu Morrum 3600C
- Abu Morrum 3600 IVCB
- Daiwa Millionaire CVZ 203A
- Daiwa Millionaire CVZ 103
- Daiwa I'ZE Light 103

Highest on my wishlist right now is a Ringa...but darned hard to find and $$$ to match.

I personally feel that round reels are just as applicable as LPs...if they also came in burner ratios, there would be those out there who wouldn't even have to consider an LP reel as most round reels are just more durable and stronger in construction than the LPs, IMO. I prefer round reels for cranking, big spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, big topwaters...otherwise most power techs. I find them easier to palm and control with my palming style.

Good luck on your search and venture into round reels otherwise!

Nobody mentioned Monoblocks. I'd put mine above any of the others. For heavier stuff the Pluton does everything I need.
