100D Shimano baitcaster

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

100D Shimano baitcaster

Post by goldrod » Tue Jun 07, 2011 7:00 am

I didn't want to jack a thread but I had to say that the 100D curado was one of the best reels. I've read where people complained that the reel doesn't have the HEG gear like it was some sort of handicap. Before HEG what was they using? The old green curados (B series) didn't have HEG and they are a staple of bass fishing. I can hardly watch a televised fishing show without seeing one of them.
Line capacity was a gem for me.. I have one on a casting dropshot rod and it works for jiggy heads. I think people tend to think that the reel was under powered and they could only finesse fish with them. Not so, with the DSV version I have 20 test on it and this reel has handle fish that I could throw the reel down its mouth and never touch the sides. I simply don't know what problems people had with this reel..

I am not sure what Shimano is thinking, I know its a competitive company but as a consumer the D series was way better than the E series. This upcoming ICAST may just prove to only increase the value of all the shimano previous offers.

I agree totally. I had a couple in like new condition and recently sold them along with a few other good offerings... now I'm already having sellers remorse. :crying:

I find the 100D to be unique in that it throws light stuff well just like the 50mg and Curado 50, but it still throws heavy stuff well for me. My 51E tends to run out of steam on long casts with bigger baits.

The entire Curado D series all the way through are my favorite curados overall though. The 200D is probably one of the most overbuilt yet high performing bass reels ever made. They are tough to find in LH right now...and are selling for more used than they did when they were in production a lot of times.

I couldn't agree more.They are completely underrated.
When I switched from Righty to Lefty reels I sold off all but 1 of my Righty reels, my best performing Curado 100D. I just can't bring myself to sell is. I had no problem selling my Steez's.

Yep....IMO, the D series were the best built Curados to date. And from the "sneak peak" at the upcoming newer Curados...this appears to still be the case.

Weight and profile (fault of the 200) is what did this series in. The reel coincided with the rise in popularity of the small framed Revo and some lighter weight options. Not saying you are gonna agree, just saying.....But the 100d was a pretty cool little reel.

100D- Yes. 200D- Noooooooo... The 100 was built on the same frame as the Chronarch 50MG.. Now that reel IS a classic.. If it weren't for the weight and over clunkiness feeling of the 200D, I think there would be a much larger following of the 100D. It just hit the market at the wrong time, and with the wrong color.. Otherwise, it's hard to argue with the following of the 50MG and that frame. Before I made the switch to Daiwa, I had a bunch of the 50Mg's and a couple of the 100D's. I agree that it was good reel, but the MG frame, and 50mg spool just put it over the top. 100D a Classic though..? It's a good reel and all but not in my book... :)

The 100D is certainly a nice reel for slower applications. I feel the E7 was a great addition for power fishing; unfortunatly they got rid of the D series when they released the E.

Most the time my 100D plays a role as a spare because I have 3 MG50's in the rotation. Other then a little weight, they work as well as the MG50. I've thought about selling the 100D but nothing to date has compelled me to want to upgrade.

It's the other way around. :D

The 100D built on the same frame as the Curado 100B from the 1990s. The Chronarch 50mg frame is derived from the Curado frame but made of magnesium instead of aluminum.

X2 - 100D (and the Chronarch 50MG) are two of my favorites.

IMO If MSRP of the 100D was $179 (rather than $199), I think it would have caught on (always thought there should have been a bigger price spread between the 100D and the Chronarch 50MG).

:-k IIRC there was somewhat of a backlash with the big price increase between the 100D (at introduction) and the previous Curado.

The 100D's previous iteration (the CU-100B) only had an MSRP of $129.99!

Again...as agreed by many of the posts here. The Curado D series is the BEST BUILT Curado series to date IMO.

The 100D is a winner, just like the 50MG and the original Scorpion 1000 that pre-dated it.

The 200D is still a very good reel...just out of time for meeting market competition and offerings. If it was out in the mid to late 90s, it would have been a leader in its category for bigger sized LP bass reels.

And I think it's still available as the Speed Master in Japan?
