How do you use your Calcutta 50

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

How do you use your Calcutta 50

Post by mrbassky1 » Tue Jun 07, 2011 6:05 am

I got one but I am not sure what application to use it for. I use matching rod and reels for different application and My guess is it would be best used for finesse fishing with 8lb line, not sure if 10lb is too big. I also considered putting light braid on it. Just curious if anyone has a rod and line they match it with for certain jobs it does really well for.

When I had one I used mine for 10 inch worms and 8 inch grubs I put 15 lb fc on mine and it worked great. I also throw senkos on it and worked really well also.

Mounted on a BCR 864 GLX, 20lb braid with a Fluro leader, I fish Senkos, plastic top-waters, Sluggos, swim worms, craws, pretty much anything I can down here where I can bury a hook to keep it weedless  .

I bought the first one I ever saw in a tackle shop on an impulse.........it was like a cuddly little puppy......so cute and adorable that I just couldn't leave without it. They really are a very very cool little reel! I love the tiny round reel shape............now if they would make it in a speed of 6:1 or higher...........well I think I might replace lots of my reels with them!

I have mine on a 7' medium Cumara Reaction Series and its spooled with 10lb Trilene 100% flourocarbon. I use it for smaller cranks, squarebills, and smaller minnowbaits.

The Conquest 50 and Calcutta TE 50 are both 6.2:1 ;) I have a couple of Conquest 50's and love every minute of fishing with them. I toss small cranks, topwaters, and jerkbaits most often. They cast so well and are so smooth, I like to reserve them for moving baits most often. Sometimes I'll do some finesse pitching with them as well though. It's definitely an all time classic!

Mine kinda just takes up space in my reel drawer...the 16" line retrieve is kinda tough to use, and I have better options for spinnerbaits/cranks...

Fun little reel to take out from time to time though...and it was my late uncle's so there's some sentimental value.

I use mine for tossing cranks and jerkbaits at ol' marble eyes.

I have three Conquest 50 with 12lb. fluoro mounted on ( 2) 803GLX and (1) 803 NRX. They are used for pitching plastics such as Senkos,Cabin Creek Large Spider parts,Baby Brushhogs, Rage Tail Craws and 6" Lizards...

Well aware of those reels and their respective ratios........but they cost serious $$$.....chose a PX68 this year, maybe next year a Conquest 50.... :-k

low gear ratio / IPT = big spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

I had a Calcutta 50 and sold it. Could not get use to the 5.0:1 gear ratio with such a small spool. :D
