Calcutta CTE100DC vs. CTE200DC

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Calcutta CTE100DC vs. CTE200DC

Post by Smalleyez » Sat May 28, 2011 1:54 am

Looking to upgrade my crankbait reel and I'd like to step into a DC reel to put on my St. Croix LTB Big Cranker. I'm throwing crankbaits that dive anywhere from 4-12 feet, but it's often in heavy current and I'm usually running 12# test, sometimes 10#. I'm drawn to the CTE100DC based on the smaller size, lighter, etc., but also wondering if the CTE200DC is where I need to be. I'd greatly appreciate any insights on this.

BTW - I have a Conquest 50 and love how it palms, but it's on a dedicated finesse setup.

ii :)

That's the way I'm leaning.

I've never owned or fished a 100DC but I do own and fish a 201DC as my crankbait reel and I've never had a problem with any crank I've wanted to fish on it. I fish Bandit 200's and the smaller Lucky Craft Skeet cranks all the way up to Spro Deep Divers and Strike King 6XD's with zero problems on 10 to 12# P-Line CXX. Just some food for thought I guess.

I have both and use my 200's for cranking and my 100's for topwater.

John, that's good to know and why I'm doing some research on this before I plunk down the cash. In my case I have some overlap with my the smaller bait cranking, so it's more a matter of overall utility. In other words, I've found my Scorpion 1000XT on my MBR 842 does a smashing job on the lower end, so I don't need to get crowded down there if a CTE200DC will handle those baits, plus the bigger baits with more line capacity. Thanks, even though this slows the process down, your information is very valuable to me.

I have a Calcutta TE 100 DC on my dedicated deep crank rod - a Shimano Cumara CUC711MH. I use 17lb Sunline Shooter Defier, which is of course a class line, and is much thinner than most domestic lines with similar ratings. I can make very long casts without concern of spooling the reel. The size and performance of this reel are perfect for what I do with it. I had the 200 but found it was too large for this purpose, but I'm not one to have a significant amount of "extra" line on the spool unless absolutely necessary, which in this case, it isn't. I also like moving deep cranks quickly along the bottom and the 100 does a better job at this for me. Outside of deep crank season, I'll put it on a few other rods I use for moving baits as I love the casting prowess, smoothness, and of course that DC sound :big grin:

Still leaning toward the 100DC. Without getting wordy, the pros and cons of each are about a wash, so technical aspects aside, I think I'd just enjoy the smaller size a little more. Thanks for all of the feedback.

I have a 200DC and had to ask the Dark Lord himself which one to get. He told me to go with the 100 size (for all-purpose bass fishing) but I found it to be too small for my liking and my hands! The Calcutta TE200DC is an incredible reel and I think would be a better choice for longer casts! When using a clackin' rap (7/8oz.) I've almos spooled the reel! I've gotten it down to the last few yards.

Both sizes will handle your assignments so it's up to you and which one feels more comfortable!

Good luck!

Dang, Rubs, you're making me feel like a ping pong ball! :beat up:

It's a close call, but a "mint" condition 100DC at a substantial discount has just entered the picture. :)
