Smoke 100 vs. Curado 50e for pitching

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Smoke 100 vs. Curado 50e for pitching

Post by 5bites » Thu May 19, 2011 5:40 am

Which do you prefer? I'm a daiwa guy big time and love how the steez and also the alphas pitch. Especially the steez. I'm thinking about trying a 51e but thought maybe I should consider the smoke also.

Also bps and tackle warehouse have two different line capacities for the smoke 100. Bps has 12/105 and tw has 12/135. Are the different reels all together? If not which one is right?

Thanks guys.

personally for me for pitching lighter lures I use Curado 50E.
For something heavier I either use the Revo Winch or E7.
I don't have a smoke so I don't know how it does for lighter lures.

Thank you for the reply.

I can't believe no one has compared these two, not even the admin.

I'm going go out on a limb and say that in this price range the bearings and mechanism are going to be similar enough that the key for pitching ability will be the weight of the spool when filled with line. That determines how fast the spool will start.

The spool weight of the Curado 50e is 11.4 grams empty and 17.9 grams filled with 14# mono. I don't know the spool weight of the Smoke 100 but could get the weight at my local sporting goods store early next week.

The spool of the Chronarch 50 MG, which is known as a good pitching reel, when filled with mono is 17.7 g. And for me there is no difference between the 50 e and 50 MG for pitching.

Line capacity makes a big difference as does the original spool weight. For example the Chronarch 50 MG spool empty weighs 12.2 grams and filled with 14# mono 17.7 grams, an increase in spool weight of 5.5 grams.

The similar size interchangeable spool to the 50 MG is a Curado 100b spool. It starts out weighing 18.9 grams and filled with 14# mono 29.4 grams. A gain in spool weight of 10.5 g.

That's good info guys thank you.

I may try the smoke first. I got to handle them at bass pro Friday and it just feels more solid.

You did not say what you planned to pitch? Regular 3/8 - 1/2 ounce with 15 - 20 on a MH power rod, I would look at the Smoke 150. I have a 151 and have been using it for pitching plastics and jigs. With the high speed gears it may become my favorite. I also have a 7.1 Core 51 and it seems a bit slow for pitching but it is very smooth and will pitch light stuff really well, e.g. 1/4 ounce Giggy heads with assorted plastics. I replaced it with a 7.x Metanium for mid weight use which is faster and will still pitch pretty light stuff (Core 100 would be the same basic reel). Both reels work and I do a LOT of pitching.

I pitch mostly paca craws with a 3/16-1/4oz. weight or 3/8oz. jigs.

I know I'm not interested in the 151. I tried the deeper spooled quantum tour pt vi and it didn't pitch well at all compared to a steez. I basically just want something to pitch like a steez but not require a car payment to buy. Smoothness isn't as important but the smoke did seem smoother and more solid than the 50

TT does have a review of the smoke. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewquantumsmoke.html Doesn't compare it to the 50e but gives good info on the Smoke. I'm debating getting one right now.

Cant really comment much on the 50E but i do currently have a smoke reel on my flipping rod and I love it! Im throwing 10lb diameter power pro(40lb test) on a Veritas rod. You can cast a mile and flip a lot further with it. My brother has a Dobyns 765 Championship series with a curado 100 reel. I"ve used his a lot but must admitt I like the smoke reel more. I am i big quantum fan have 3 PT reels and one smoke but I am going to add 2 more smoke reels by the end of the year. Im also going to upgrade the Rod to a dobyns or a Powell endurance for flippin. I really want a dobyns championsip exterme but I think the 795 might be too much for flipping light texas rigged plastics. Im usually at 3/16 oune or 1/4 at the heaviest

If I could get a really good deal in a used 101 I'd try one. Now I'm trying to decide if I should wait until after icast. Theirs to many good rumors flying around.
