Chronarch and Core

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Chronarch and Core

Post by Birdi23nls » Fri Apr 01, 2011 5:29 am

What is the difference between these two reels besides weight? It is going to go on my Dobyns DX 744 I throw big senkos, 10 and 12 inch worms, spinnerbaits, and jigs on this rod. Is the core worth the extra money? If you would get the core over the chronarch which size core would you put on this rod?

thanks for the help gents

I have a Core 50 and a Chronarch 100D7, and I can honestly say I like the Chronarch more. It just feels very fluid. It's my new favorite BC reel. That being said, the Core 100 is the same reel as the Chronarch except the lower gear ratio and made from magnesium. I would choose based on gear ratio, as they're both excellent reels.

I thought that both the core and the chronarch come in 7:1 gear ratios. I really like the looks of the chronarch more so than the core, if weight is the only difference between the two, then I may go with the Chronarch, depending on what reel balances the rod better.

One thing that bothers me about shimano reels is the straight handle and the small knobs on the baitcasters. Do you guys notice a difference from using reels with a swept handle and then using a handle that comes stock on the shimanos?

Core 51Mg - GR 7.1:1, 5.5oz, $369
Core Mg - GR 6.2:1, 6.1oz, $349
Core MGFV - GR 7:1, 6.7oz, $380
Chronarch D5 - GR 5:1, 7.6oz, $300
Chronarch D7 - GR 7:1, 7.6oz, $300

I own the 51Mg, Mg and D7 and prefer them in that order.
The extra weight(2.1oz!) and bulk of the Chronarch can't compete with the Core 51Mg for me.

I like swept handle looks but hate knuckling the handle nut. ](*,)

I would go with Chronarch D. There's something about fighting fish with it.

If possibly, I'd strongly suggest you test drive both reels on the rod you will use it on prior to purchasing. The palming is quite different between the Chronarch D7 and the Core 50mg7. As mentioned the Core 100 is same body style as the D7 but not available as 7.1:1. I owned both (50mg7 & D7) and recently sold both to purchase a JDM Shimano Metanium MG7. Same body style and color as the D7 and available as 7.1:1 which I wanted. If you can handle no US warranty it's an option you should consider.

Another thing to consider is that the D7 MAY balance better with the "bigger" 744 rod...

Also, when casting big baits with heavy line, neither reel is ideal. They are limited in their line capacity. Although not up to par with the other 2 regarding quality, the Curado E7 handles 17+ lb. line better, when making long casts.

I don't know if I'm right, but I think that it's another difference between these reels, the Chronarch D has brass gearings... so it must be more durable.

the d7 also has the assist stopper, the core does'nt for some reason.plus the d7 will feel smoother on the retrieve.

just to add...if you plan on using in brackish or salt water the Chronarch will last much much longer....magnesium reels fail miserably in these conditions....

I have the D7,100Mg,100MgFV, and the 50Mg .... also contributing to the smothness of D7 could be from:

D7 ... (7)Bearing System.(2) of the bearings are in the handle paddles.
100Mg or 100MgFV ... (5) Bearing System. No bearings in handle paddles.

Also food for thought ... D7 = 84mm handle.
100Mg or 100MgFV = 80mm handle.

50Mg... (9) Bearing System (4) of the bearings are in paddles with handle length = 80mm.

I studied these choices for a long time but ended up with the Chronarch D7. I made the right choice.

I went out and bought a 50mg. I haven't had much time with it but the time I have had I'm not impressed. It's the most I ever paid for a reel. I've fished really with nothing but curados from the b series up and still own about 6 100bs and use them everytime on the water.

I don't see the price difference of my curado E reels and the core I own. If the chronarch is smoother than a curado or more refined I'd be all over the chronarch. The core just doesn't do it for me or at least the 50mg. Really outside of weight and looks I'd prefer to own more 100bs or my favorite the 100d

I wish I'd never tried my buddy's Ch-D7. It is definitely smoother and quieter than my Metanium MG7. Something about that aluminum frame and brass gearing on the D7. I'm now on the hunt for a 101D7 to add to my collection. :x

Ya, I have not made my decision yet...I added the Zillion Type R to my list now. I'm going to bass pro shop tomorrow. This reel is going on a Dobyns DX744...I can't remember if already told you guys that without going back to look but I'm going to bring it with me and put all of these reels on the rod and see how she feels.

thanks
