Best reel for $120

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Best reel for $120

Post by Trooper46 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:24 am

I am looking to pick up another bass reel this year and I am limiting the price to under 150, but idealy I would like to spend around 120. (Been spending too much lately).

Some reels that came to mind are;

BPS JM Black
Abu Revo S
Shimano Citica
Daiwa Tierra

What are some thoughts on the reels i mentioned? Right now I am leaning on to the abu baised on stats alone.

My choice in that price range would be the Citica hands down.

I would look at the Lews Tournament Speed Spool Casting reel, they are $140, but a lot of reel for the money. They are pretty light and have the dual braking system. But if that is more then you want to spend I would go with the Citica.

The Johnny Morris Gold will be the highest performing reel you can buy in the price range, the citica will last the longest, the Revo S has the strongest drag, the daiwa Tierra is the most daiwa, and the BPS Carbonlite is the lightest...

all up to you as what you want in a reel.

If you don't mind shopping on Ebay, you can pick a NIB Shimano Curado for darn near that.

+1

There's also the Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Victory reels at the $100 mark. You can also find some good deals online on some other reels as well.

Pretty good summary.

In that price range I own a Revo S and Carbonlite. Between those two I feel the Carbonlite has a pretty clear advantage in casting distance. It is also basically thumb-free casting using the centrifugal and magnetic brakes; it's one of the easiest casting reels I've used. Carbonlite is noticeably lighter, feels better in my hand and I love the EVA grips. The Revo has a more solid feel to it and stronger drag, but IMO the Carbonlite does not feel "cheap" or "plasticy" at all.

Between the two I prefer the Carbonlite overall. I use my Revo for jigs, pitching etc where I feel a stronger drag may help (probably just a confidence thing). I have not had the chance to extensively use a Citica, although I have played with one in store a few times and used a friend's. In my opinion the Citica felt a little more 'plasticy'/'hollow'/'loose' than either the Carbonlite or Revo. I'm sure it's a great reel based on all the good reviews, but it just does not feel right in my hands.

As mentioned above, if you're willing to spend up to $140 you should be able to find the Curado, Revo SX (and STX for a bit more) at online auction sites.
