Reeling Demographics... are you a righty or lefty

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Speaking of casting reels only... do you reel with your right or left hand?

Reeling Demographics... are you a righty or lefty

Post by Cal » Sat Mar 12, 2011 3:55 am

The excuse is often given by manufacturers that the left handed reeling market is not big enough. Let's find out what the skew is here on TT.

And of course, since many members eventually switch to one or the other, you can change your vote over time.

I use both, depending on technique. Although I find myself using LH reels more and more often...dang you TT
I swear I had 500+ posts, I swear it!

I am right hand dominate but use left hand retrieve reels exclusively. I have for about 15 years. It just plain makes sense! I hope Shimano comes out with a low speed lefty reel this year. I appreciate TT's support for lefties!

You find a Aldebaran Mg L which has a 5.8:1 ratio on eBay for less then the price of a Core 51Mg on most websites.
I know is not a super low ratio but it's a pretty amazing reel.

I am right handed but got to reel with the left hand side which is much more comfortable since you have to use your stronger arm to control the rod.

My right hand is my dominate hand. Started with one left hand reel when I first got into bass fishing, then acquired 2-3 right hand reels a couple of years later. Used both for a while, then eventually went all right hand reels.

I am right handed, hence I have stronger right arm, hence I want the ROD in my right hand for casting, setting the hook, and fighting the fish and this goes for both bait casters and spinning reels. By process of elimination (I only have two hands) I reel lefty.

Right hand with casting and left hand with spinning. I voted right hand.

I guess I fall in line with most of the posters here. I'm right handed but I reel with my left hand, it just makes more sense to me that if you are right handed, you'd want your dominant hand for casting, pitching, hook setting and playing fish. Casting with the right then switching over to reel with the right seems like a wasted move. I remember when I first stared using baitcasters (late 80's), I bought that old school Daiwa that had the 7:1 gear ratio from BPS. Coming from a spinning background I couldn't adjust and sent it back for a lefty Shimano bantam. Years later I got used to the right handed baitcasters but always preferred lefties. I will say that manufacturers offer a lot more lefties now than when I first got into baitcasters. Lefties is all I own now and I'll never buy another righty.

Hey Cal, I'm pretty sure I know the answer but what did you vote?
