NRX 901 SJR question
NRX 901 SJR question
I am currently using an Expride 6’10 ML as my “do it all” finesse rod. I don’t fish the drop shot or Ned rig much any more. I more often than not have a 1/8 ounce Coolbaits underspin or 1/16 Okishira head w/Spark Shad tied on. I want one rod for all the light stuff. Would the 901 be the best rod to throw the swimbaits, spybaits, little tubes, finesse jerk baits, drop shot and Ned’s?
Re: NRX 901 SJR question
I'll get this out of the way since I'm sure it's coming...you should take a look at the Steez 7'6" M/ML "The One". I did actually just pick this rod up after reading all the glowing reviews and I fished it yesterday for the first time. I only threw a 1/4oz Keitech finesse football head with a TRD CrawZ trailer, but I think I'm going to love this rod for anything finesse oriented. I have never fished or even held the NRX 901 SJR so I will let others comment in more detail, but my understanding is that it will have a much more parabolic action than the Steez.
Re: NRX 901 SJR question
I’ve actually owned the 7’6 MML Steez. I’m probably just biased towards Loomis, but the Steez was a little underwhelming given all the hype.
Re: NRX 901 SJR question
I have the second generation one. The one with the red handle. My main spinning rod is a Nrx +852s. I used “The One” for all of the lighter stuff. If I were only going to carry one spinning rod, I probably would’ve liked it better. I didn’t love it for just the light stuff.
Re: NRX 901 SJR question
Not a vote against the 901(haven't fished it). I'd consider a Phenix K2 713 for all of those tiny baits if you don't mind a shorter option. It's fast enough to do thin-wire hook bottom contact (and has tons of sensitivity) but moderate enough to feather a strike on a moving bait or to keep fish pinned on small-jerkbait-trebles.Rodster14 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 2:02 amI am currently using an Expride 6’10 ML as my “do it all” finesse rod. I DO like both 761MML rods for the techniques, as well (the blue one a bit better than the red one). But I understand that's not an option

Anyone with experience with the 901? That is the only rod I am really considering.

Re: NRX 901 SJR question
I have the steez and have had the 901S and the Steez side by side. The 901S has a whippy action to it. Very parabolic and for light baits would be nice. I personally didn't think drop shot for it but light cranks, hair jigs, spybaits I think it would be nice. If I went 7-6 with a Loomis it would be the 902S. The 901 is a nice rod but almost had that trout rod feel to it. At least to me.

1/8 plus a spark shad is too much for the 901. The 902 would be a better choice (the ratings are a bit high on it). I’ve fished both a ton for smallmouth.
Re: NRX 901 SJR question
I went ahead and ordered one at a deal based primarily on how much Matt and Tim from Tactical Bassin rave about this rod. I know they are Shimano fans, but I’ve never heard them talk about the 902. I guess I’ll try it for myself and see. I’ve been wanting to throw some hair jigs anyway. Based on the comments, I could have made a mistake.
Re: NRX 901 SJR question
I have a 901s and use for Ned rigs, smaller blade baits and works really well for small Shad Raps and smaller spybaits.

Ned rigs, hair jigs, spybaits, its probably my favorite spinning rod.
I use it for drop shotting more then anything and its amazing, I can feel it all.
