Anybody Still Using a Rod with Pistol Grip?
Anybody Still Using a Rod with Pistol Grip?
I just watched an old video from around 1980. Rick Clunn fished short rods with the pistol grips. I guess it depends on your age, but when I started bass fishing 40+ years ago, it was the standard. Those rods were usually 5'6" to 6' long with very short butt, actually, more like no butt. I used them until the early 1990s. I checked my garage, and found two of them. I'm sure I have more in my parents' house.
I'm thinking about using one of them, just for nostalgic reasons. I'm mostly a topwater dude, so the rods don't need to be super sensitive. I'm sure for smaller topwater bait (1/4 ~ 3/8oz), it still works well. I have not seen anybody using them for very long time. Does anybody still use them?

I still use a G.Loomis premier 5’6” medium pistol grip. It’s from
Around 1993. I use it for square bills in tight cover, or pitching under docks. I enjoy it. Also have a old Shimano jimmy Houston signature 6’ medium I use from time to time.

I handled a lighttning rod pistol grip at bass pro...felt great in hand. It would make a good topwater rod for sure.

I still have and use a Lamiglas 6' MH for Zara spools. I sold one of the others recently, and wish I had kept it now. They are great for bank beating around some of the grown-up edges of the ponds I frequent.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

...and with a few mod of attaching a scope and 10 round clip, you will have yourself a bushcraft shootem or fishem bayou rig. It's essentially all lead.

Most of the Major Craft trout rods have something sort of like a pistol grip. I really love those, the shorter grip gives a great range of motion for one-handed casting.
