Medium Heavy Spinning Rods

Post by HobeyBaker » Wed Dec 25, 2019 8:51 am

I'm kicking around the idea of getting a medium heavy spinning rod for power shotting. The rod would need to have a lighter tip with a strong backbone to pull the fish out of cover. Rods I have come across online include:

843 SJR Conquest
843 SJR GLX
MB TS 775
Daiwa Steez AGS 7 H
St Croix Legend Elite 7 MHF

Which of these rods would have the lightest tip? I have a 843 GLX MBR. Is the same blank used on the SJR as the MBR.

If you can find one, the old Loomis BSR852 will be perfect. It was originally designated as a “Senko” rod and has a lot more power than the current Loomis 2-power offerings. Thinking about replacing the recoils with SIC’s and using mine for Inshore.

The recoils are a deal breaker since I use a braid to leader. Even with a FG the knot gets hooked up once in a while on my NRXs.

That’s my reason for replacing the recoils. I never have leader knot hang ups with my NRX casting rods but that one BSR has given me fits! But I love the blank so to me it’s worth the expense.

How heavy is the cover you're fishing? Power shotting is a primary technique for me on the Delta. I will use casting or spinning, depending on my mood. Of the rods you've listed, I'd go for the 843 GLX. However, there is no need to limit yourself to those choices. My personal rod at this moment is a Dobyns Extreme 763 (since discontinued). I imagine the 743 would work the same. I like longer spinning rods when power shotting. I am also thinking of moving to the MB Enforcer. Like you, I like rods with a little softer tip when drop shotting. However, I run straight fluoro.

The inshore NRX rods are built for braid to leader knots, much much larger guides. I love the NRX804S for a heavy duty spinning setup.

I have fished and owned several of the models you have mentioned in a medium action. With 842s being a personal favorite I would be all about the conquest of glx in the 843S.

It would be open pockets in matted milfoil.

I have the Levante Enforcer and I think it's a great option. The XX might be more sensitive (haven't fished it) but to me the grip on the Levante is more comfortable. It just fishes really well and has become one of my favorites.

Take a look at the Megabass destroyer brigand F4-74XS Excellent rod and lots of power. It’s slightly faster in action to the XX enforcer. I ended up selling the enforcer as I realize I hate the feel of a spinning rod with a front locking nut.

Is there any noticeable difference in the tip or power between the Conquest and GLX?

Between the conquest and glx the conquest seems to have a little more power. GLX 842S is rated for up 3/8 oz baits but I fish over that on it. The conquest is rated for 1/2 oz. in the same model.

I wish the MB Beast Hunts rod was still in production. That rod seems exactly what I’m looking for based on the description of the rod.
