NRX balance

Post by russ57 » Sat Nov 16, 2019 9:13 pm

I was talking to a guy in a tackle shop yesterday, and he mentioned they would be getting some new NRX rods in for 2020- I've never handled a high end rod in a store before, or anything above my exprides, so it got me thinking about the series.

Obviously the NRX are loved by many great fisherman, but I don't really understand why if the balance is as poor as claimed to be by some. How big of an issue is it on the 85X series compared to the 89X?

Depends on which rod. 893 894 balance okay, only bad rod is the 895 imo.

Hold an 852 paired with a Pixy platform...
Hold an 873 paired with almost anything...
Hold an 893 paired with an Alphas platform...

Then fish with them, and you will literally feel and know the power of the dark side... 8-)
Get your kids hooked on fishing, and they'll never have any money for drugs or alcohol.

852 would prolly be what I lean towards if I were to get one.

question everything you read on the internet for sure. Last week I was fishing a 7'10H Kistler rod that weights 5oz. Reel was 6.2oz. I pick up my NRX 894 with a 6.2oz reel and it feels like a feather. Why? because I have roughly 1oz on the butt such that it is actually slightly butt heavy. The total weight of the NRX 894 with my added weight is roughly 5.4oz yet if feels like a feather.

Most guys that talk about balance don't have a legit clue what something weights. Ask for both stats.

Let me state a physics problem to ponder. Assume a rod had terrible balance (15 inches in front of the reel seat). Now I tell you the rod weights in at 2oz. Does the balance have any material impact on your fishing or fatigue????????????????? I would say no unless it is 11 ft long.

The NRX 895 has poor balance in my opinion and my butt cap trick won't fix it. My loved 894's need some butt weight in my opinion. All others are good to go in my book yet I typically install butt caps no matter to make them perfect. The NRX is about the only rod I own that allows me to add butt caps. Wish my Kistlers did.

So why install a butt cap on an expensive rod?? because the blank and action of the 894 and 893's are perfect and super sensitive. The things that really matter in my boat.

My issue with the butt cap is that it is just so ugly.

I can't argue that. Had same opinion initially. Fished it for 1 hour and never gave it any thought after that point. I am function over form by nature.

then again, I can argue only the 894 might need it and that is in the eyes of the beholder. The rest IMO don't need it. Do they benefit from it just as my 2007 7ft GLX rod? Yes, but not needed.

The 852c is the most balanced of the bunch, and most sensitive I might add.

Got a Metanium MGL on mine and the balance is fine IMO.

803 may be on par with the 852. well, at least to have anyone utter a negative word about an 803 would be a shock to me. possible on the internet but a shock no matter what

The nrx has a roomy reel seat that allows all your fingers above the trigger while jigging. Held like that, they feel balanced and agile to me...894 on down. I do use aluminum framed reels on them.

Didn’t like the 803c. It was a broom handle.

Hey, you asked

I've got the 'broom handle' spinning version. It is suprisingly powerful, but I think that's what I like about it.

a broom handle infers too much power???? Is that what you seek to share? At least the balance was good

I sold all my 803c's because I now fish florida and it is generally underpowered. In absolute terms, it fishes like the NRX 893 with less leverage and a little bit less tip.

Even so, to call a 803c a powerful rod I do find humor in. You must be perch fishing with it or trying to present 1/8oz lures.
