Medium Light to Medium casting rods. Whats your go to??

Post by esvangler » Mon Feb 18, 2019 9:19 pm

Whats up guys,

Im looking to find a casting rod, preferably something over 7' that can handle 1/8oz and 3/16oz baits comfortably. Whats your guys go to?

Recently got a Phenix Feather in the ML, works very good so far. They even have a L action.

My suggestion in the link. Just purchases this recently and it is a gem.

Mine wears a Core 51 with an Avail spool and Hedgehog Air bearings, spooled with 16lb Sunline Xplasma Asegai. Casts 1/8oz (plus plastic) shakey heads well, throws 3/16oz shakeys into the next area code. The 852c is x-fast, if you prefer a slower tip, the GLX 842C MBR will also handle those same presentations.

Ive used an NRX 852c...nice rod for what you are looking for.

I curre tly use a custom Phenix K2 714. Although rated as a MH, its more like a ML+.

I second this! The 842 GLX new version is very very nice too

My go to for small jigs and small worms in the 1/8 oz. range is a Kistler 7’ Helium 3 medium light, with a Aldebaran 50HG. Not over 7’, but does the job very well

How does the conquest compare in power to the 852 nrx? And if you ever owned the 842 NRX same question? Thanks

842 Conquest or NRX. Conquest is a little more powerful than NRX. Tip isn’t as light on the Conquest, but flexes further down the rod before hitting backbone. I’d say NRX tip is a ML and Conquest tip is a M. Rod ratings definitely show this. Both have that smooth fast action to them and load very nicely when hooked up. I mainly throw treble baits(jerkbaits, topwater, square bills) on both and feel the Conquest is a little better because of the tip. 852 is a sweet light jig rod, and some like it for jerkbaits(I don’t like a Loomis XF for jerkbaits) but the 842 can fish those techniques and a lot more. MBR rods are way more versatile.

For me it’s 3 rods:
1-Kistler KLX 7’0 Light action Ned Rig casting rod.
2-Kistler Helium 3 med/light 7’0 casting rod
3-Kistler Helium 3 Medium casting rod those are my 3 main rods.

Over the years in using your parameters I have mostly used St. Croix rods. I personally have used their Legend Tournament Series rods as I feel they over the best blend of quality to price but if you can afford the Legend Elite or G. Loomis NRX I have no doubt the also will perform perfectly. Now as to your weight range of lures "I" would use the Medium Light. There are also quite a few choices as to rod length (6' to over 8'). You said you were looking for a casting rod. Any particular reason you are picking a casting rod for such light weights as 1/8oz and 3/16oz baits since a high quality spinning reel and rod will cast it farther in my experience? :D

I do not have the nrx842c as it's been discontinued. i do have several nrx852 and cq842. The conquest is more versatile but i prefer the nrx for bottom contact and i like the shorter handle of the nrx.

This is an excellent rod and the build quality and fit and finish is way beyond the cost. If they were 50% more $$$, they would still be a solid deal. However, they do fish a little lighter than their ratings, indicate, as most Phenix rods do. For a less expensive rod, the Maxim 7-3ML and 6-10ML are really excellent rods, as well. I let a buddy talk me out of the 7-3, but still have that 6-10ML. It has a Pixy aboard it, and I think it will stay with me for a long, long time to come.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.
