G. Loomis MBR 842 GLX

For those of you who have one, is the Loomis MBR 842 GLX mag bass rod a good rod for small crankbaits? Also, what other applications is it good for? Finally, is it a significantly different rod than its cousin, the MBR 782 GLX?

I have the MBR 842 GLX and use it for jerk baits as well as a drop shot rod. I think it would make an excellent small crank rod.
I don't have a 782 to compare.

If you're using it for jerkbaits, I assume you snap the rod sideways to impart action to the jerkbait. Correct? Is that method difficult to learn? I've always snapped the rod downwards, using shorter rods. I'm 5'8"; so, I'm a bit height challenged to begin with; and, snapping downward with the longer rod might pose a challenge.

Anything “mag” finesse. I also like it for smaller topwaters like a 1/4 or 3/8 oz popper style bait.

I own multiples of both the classic GLX MBR 842 and 782 and they are significantly different in my hand. 842 is faster in action and about a 1/2 power greater than the 782. Both excellent rods, and two I will never part with.

Which do you prefer for pointers, 110's, and the like. Been thinking about picking up a classic GLX 842, or possibly the IMX JBR

That is very interesting to hear. I have an classic 782 GLX and found it slower and less powerful then I expected based on experience with a few different mbr783 and cr 723 rods. I never though that the classic 842 would be stronger and faster. I like the 782 for wacky worms and other open hook stuff but it's not the ideal light t-rig rod I was looking for.

mine are older models

782 for pointer 78 size, Pop'rs, Sammy 85 and any kind of small crank. can't stand the rod for bottom bouncing. Exceed 1/2 oz and rod is overloaded

842 for finesse bottom bouncing, found I did not like if for anything else. the strangest thing was preferring lipless cranks on the 843 over the 842.

I'm the opposite. I caught several fish throwing lipless cranks on my GLX 842. I guess I feel more comfortable about not pulling the hook when I apply more pressure on the fish with it. I have the GLX 843 too.i guess it also depends on what type of cover your fishing too. I just bought a tatula elite 6'8ml for my jerkbait rod. I mostly throw vision 110's. I do love my GLX 842 and 843. I kayak fish too. The 3 rods that always go with me are those 2 and my Nrx 893. After that it's a toss up for my 4th rod. Kistler Helium 7'3H xf or GLX 822dsr(love this rod).
I'll be fishing on cape cod this upcoming saturday(open water still, hopefully), I plan on throwing some 1/4 oz blade baits on my GLX 842. See how it does. Can't go wrong it. Great rod. Got off track. Sorry

I have the MBR842 GLX as well. Mainly use it for spinnerbaits and bottom contact but I used it with squarebills, shallow cranks as well. Very versatile rod, had mine for at least 10 years, would never part with it.

I have owned two OG MBR 842's and one new version. I prefer the newer version and it's not even close. It's much more sensitive and faster actioned and the longer handle makes it much more balanced. I love it for jerkbaits, but found it a little long for my style but the action will handle them with ease. Mine is used for drop shotting with a casting reel, dragging tubes, 4" senkos, and topwaters...but mainly the finesse stuff. Great rod!!
