I'm looking at a dobyns hp 742c for throwing little dippers on 3/16-3/8oz jig heads, most of the time it'll be 3/16 and 1/4, 3/8 will be the rare exception. For those of you that have fished this rod, do you think casting these lighter weights would be a problem? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I've been throwing under spins in similar weights with small keitechs all fall. My 742c hp has handled them pretty well, with 1/4oz heads being the sweet spot for me. Long distance hook-setting power left something to be desired when using straight fluoro. With 20lb braid to leader power was sufficient with lighter wire hooks. Action of the rod is great for this technique and my fishing style. In another month I'll be going back to straight fluoro and this will be my primary blade bait and small spoon rod for the winter months.

Thank you both for the input so far! I'm in Wisconsin so i can't get my hands on this rod unless I order one. Could either of you compare it to a 852 g loomis casting rod, in terms of action and power? Or any other rod that is similar? The comment about long distnace hook setting power has me just a bit concerned, as i'll be using flouro, but only use jigheads with light wire hooks. Thanks again!

I don't have a 852c, but had a nrx 852s for a while (before it was stolen! ). Nrx is similar in power, but significantly faster. It worked better for me when using straight fluoro for single hook applications.

Probably my favorite rod to fish. 1/4oz is the sweet spot I think but I throw 1/8oz shakey heads for smallies in the winter time with no problems. I even fish crappies with it. Sure wished Dobyns made a 741C.
