Looking for a rod to use as a senko rod, small paddletails, flukes, double down for minor use on shaky head and maybe dropshot. Think I’d prefer a bit of a shorter rod but still open to opinions. Was looking at the 852c or 853c

I've used my GLX 852c for all of those applications except for dropshot and it handled all of them just fine but for your primary purposes I prefer my NRX 803c because it's an awesome rod to skip with.

NRX 803 and 893. I prefer the 893 but have owned both for many years each. The 893 was developed for senko's and soft jerkbaits. I use it for shaky heads mostly.

You don’t feel the 893 is over power for the shaky head?

No. I’m fishing 1/4 and 5/16oz total weight rigs on 12#fc or 30# braid. If I drop any lower I go to spinning gear

Thank you. I am hoping to get 2 new set ups by 2 weekends from now as I have a weekend fishing trip. Most likely won’t be nrx’s as I have a line on glx’s for a good price. First one is a glx 894c that will be paired with a chronarch mgl, hoping to have it by Wednesday this week. Looking to throw 3/8-3/4oz jigs, 3/8-1/2oz Texas rigs, 1/4 and 1/2oz swim jigs heads with kietech 3.8 and 4.8’s, maybe some chatterbaits. Not sure what else I’ll throw on the rod. Second one I want to cover the lighter end of the spectrum. I love throwing senko’s like I mentioned, mainly weightless, but occasional 1/8 and 3/16 bullet weights, finesse jigs maybe, smaller paddletails, weightless flukes and stuff. Will try dropshot and or/shaky head on it but have a spinning rod I can use for that. This second rod will be paired with either another chronarch mgl or an aldebaran 51. I thought the 853c might be better due to shorter easier to handle and thought the 893 would be so close to the 894.

Second one I want to cover the lighter end of the spectrum. I love throwing senko’s like I mentioned, mainly weightless, but occasional 1/8 and 3/16 bullet weights, finesse jigs maybe, smaller paddletails, weightless flukes and stuff.

I fish all those lures on a MBR 783 GLX and really love it. My only complaints with the rod is I think the handle is maybe 1-2" too long and I wish the reel seat had a bit more of a ramp up to the locking nut. But for the lures you mentioned it has been outstanding, I also throw 1/2 Lipless cranks and 3/8oz spinnerbaits with it as well. I bought it to be an all-purpose bank fishing stick and it has been great to me. The tip will load a weightless Trickworm and it's backbone is enough to get them out of light pads. It's a short rod, but for most of my uses accurate casting and ease of handling trump raw casting distance.

I can only speak to the NRX models. The 893 is far less powerful then the 894 in the tip. As you get down to the butt section they may only be a power rating apart. Further my 893 is lighter and better balanced then the 894. I would not give up either. The 893 to me is of similar power as my old style GLX 843 or 783 though the tip has a bit of a different feel. to actually watch deflection or throw a 1/2oz spinnerbait they are very similar.

The length and power is a personal thing. You could lay a NRX 852 or 3 on my deck and I'd pick up the 893. Hell, I pick up the 894 many days when others would go with a 893. We all fish different lines and in different environments. I err on the side of power. If you think your 894 is in the zone with a 3/8oz jig and trailer then you likely will think the 893 a great fit for a shaky. If you feel the 894 does not get into the zone until you have a 5/8oz jig and big trailer then you likely would like a 2 power rod. Many knowledgeable anglers have different opinions.

Thabks everyone! I’m picking up the 894c tomorrow after work, and Saturday I’m going try to pop by all the local stores to get my hands on the 853c, and 893c and hopefully the 852c. I want the 893 because no matter where I look everyone speaks so highly of it but I feel like it might be a touch long when I fish my local pond and it grows up quick there so a shorter rod comes in handy for sure! When on the boat there won’t be a problem. The 852 seems to be very popular as well, never even considered it until everyone just recently mention I should go that route. Every store I go to is sold out! I feel like the 853 would be great but just got me worried when everyone seems to go 852 or 893.

Thanks gentleman! Got myself a glx 894c and a glx 852c paired both with chronarch mgl’s! Love these rods, took them out this afternoon and there very light, crazy sensitive just awesome rods! That little 852c is going be deadly! Loads of power for such a small light little rod! Got a good 3lber on a senko this afternoon and a really nice just shy of 5lbs on the 894c
