cranking rod
cranking rod
I'm looking for advise on a crank bait rod for throwing shallow running cranks under 1/2 oz. I'd like to keep it around $200 or less. Please help.

Check with Gary to see if he can get you into a IMX Pro 843c CBR for $200. I have the old E6X 843c CBR. I like the taper, but hate the guides on it.
Re: cranking rod
i have St Croix Legend tournament big cranker and i think it is just a bit more than $200 but it is worth every single penny.cubs23 wrote:I'm looking for advise on a crank bait rod for throwing shallow running cranks under 1/2 oz. I'd like to keep it around $200 or less. Please help.

Re: cranking rod
Is it good for the lighter square bills?
Re: cranking rod
For those weights I’d go with a Dobyns Champ 764 RM CB or 804 CB. There’s something sweet about that 764, I don’t think I’ve ever had such a good hookup / landing ratio out of a cranking rod before! I personally like 7’6” or longer for my cranks, if you don’t like that length I’m sure the 704 CB is a good stick too... Call the Tackle Trap and see what they can do for you, great people to do business with for sure!

St-Croix Legend Tournament Glass, best crankbait rod I have ever used.

Re: cranking rod
The 764 tm has a super short handle. Got one with very little use I would like to get rid of. If the handle was better length it would be a game changer for me. Where are you.

Texas... That’s my only complaint about that rod too, that’s why I threw the 804 CB out there too, it has a 15” handle.angry john wrote:The 764 tm has a super short handle. Can you give us a little more info? Like in are you target casting, long open water casting? Do you prefer shorter or longer rods?cubs23 wrote:I'm looking for advise on a crank bait rod for throwing shallow running cranks under 1/2 oz. I'd like to keep it around $200 or less. Please help.
Re: cranking rod
I like rods in the 7' range. I will mostly be banking the banks with 1.0 and 1.5 square bills.
Re: cranking rod
Dobyns Champ 705 CB is a great cranking rod and moving bait rod.

GLoomis E6 CBR 845
St Croix Avix X 7' MH Moderate (I have this rod and really impressed. great for your needs)
Dobyns 704cb
From what I researched, the 845 and St. Croix 7' MH moderate crankbait rods are very close in power/action.
Glass/Composite:
Dobyns 704cb
Zodias 7' M
Re: cranking rod
Another vote for the Dobyns Champion 704CB here. I would stick with the 4 power if 1.5 squarebills are on the upper end of your intended use. Great rod for 1.5s, DT4s, and jerkbaits (I use braid to 12# leader).
