NRX 854
Re: NRX 854
I can't speak to theses two rods but lets take the NRX 894 and maybe the loomis MBR 844. Both 4 powered rods but the lure rating higher on the MBR. I think it is just a matter of action and rod loading optimization on the slightly slower action MBR844. I see the same thing in 2 Powell rods I own. Might be the same blank but cut differently. The slower action rod has the higher weight rating.
loomis seems to be overly conservative on NRX ratings. I often throw 1oz rigs on my NRX 894. At about 1.2oz I feel I am taxing the rod during a cast.

Re: NRX 854
I hear ya. The 7'5" is getting a bit long for me. I like a stouter rod than most for bottom contact. I know st.Croix is heavy for a MH and Loomis is light for a heavy
I want to buy an 854c but don't want it to have less power than my 7MH LE

Re: NRX 854
I would think the 854 has the potential to feel less powerful. The 873 or 894 would make you happy. Forget the length. I fished the MBR 844 and 894 side by side for a week with plastics and then sold my 844's off. The 844 just did nothing plastic wise as well as the 894 and the length was a non-factor in handling the rod.
In recent years I've added 2 7'3 Kistlers but really don't tell much difference in them an my 894's in terms of rod length.
I'm able to fish 1/4oz to 5/16oz total weight rigs on my 894's with grace and pull big bass out of everything but pure punching situations. I like my power too so that is why I think you need to consider this rod.

Re: NRX 854
You may have talked me into an 895. Looking for something 5/16-3/8oz t-rigs, 3/8oz jigs and occasional 1/2oz jig

No, you want an 894. 895 is very tip heavy and does not have many fans because of it.
894 is optimal for most guys around 1/2oz; some will comment 3/4oz. I was only sharing that the 894 for me fishes a large range of baits from 5/16 to 1oz.
Re: NRX 854
The 893 is also good for those weights, that's what I use
Re: NRX 854
based on lure ranges you are correct, 893 is fine. It is where you are throwing the rig and ones expectation of power on the hook set might make one want more. The 893 is not a pitching to cover rod but is fine in open water.
a super simple rule. If 12# FC will work, then the 893 is likely a good option. If 17# FC and up or braid is needed, I recommend 894.

Re: NRX 854
I use 15# FC around wood and MH veg. I use 6 power MB rods for it now (Superdestroyer/FMJ) but am looking for the ultimate sensitivity. I use 8 MB power for Froggin and punching.
Re: NRX 854
My MH LE is a bit too soft
Re: NRX 854
The 854 would be perfect for those weights. Personally I wouldn't use my 893 for 3/8oz jigs. The occasional 1/2oz jig for the 854 would be fine. I actually prefer longer rods, so I use the 873 for 3/8oz jigs and '15 7'3h zbone for 1/2oz. I have a pretty new 854 that was bought in Jan '18 from American legacy fishing that I'd be willing to part with for the right priceObz wrote:I'm curious about the power of the NRX 854. Re: NRX 854
I've not fished this model LE but when I hear someone say this, I think stout hook set. This leads me to the NRX 873 or 894. From the reviews of the 854, not clear to me it would be stout enough in your hand. 10 other guys might say your LE is just fine with the lures you note.Obz wrote:My MH LE is a bit too soft
Do a search on 894 vs 854 vs 873 and look for views.
I prefer longer and more power then an average guy. I fish jig/trailer on a NRX 894 and the 15 Kistler zbone 7'3h that Hennesy notes.
Re: NRX 854
Do you think the 894 and z bone 73H are similar power?DavidSA wrote:I've not fished this model LE but when I hear someone say this, I think stout hook set. This leads me to the NRX 873 or 894. Re: NRX 854
yes but keep in mind I have the zbone produced just before this last release. My zbone is a true xfast rod so it fishes a little stouter then the NRX. Maybe too fast for a braid guy in a short line application. I have no idea what the new model is like.
Re: NRX 854
Very much appreciate your recommendation on the NRX 894c. I havent had a chance to fish it yet. I did get to play around in the yard. I strapped it to an sv103, 5/16oz bullet weight, 15lb shooter and my Fav creature bait. I use a 5/16 Trig mostly. The rod loads up great for pitching and casting that weight. While dragging the trig through the grass in the yard I was very happy with the rod deflection, it seems like I won't have any issues driving hooks home. The extra length didn't bother me at all and it balanced out well with the 7.8oz reel. I have a strong feeling she is the "one"! I fish a lot of clear water, 1/4-3/8oz Trigs are my main game, she is going to do that flawlessly. I'll use my one of my Fausts for 1/2oz+ jigs, my super destroyer for skipping docks and my kistler H3 7L/MH for 3/16oz tubes. I think my bottom contact quiver is complete!DavidSA wrote:yes but keep in mind I have the zbone produced just before this last release.
