Favorite drop shot set ups

Post by esvangler » Sat Jul 21, 2018 12:50 pm

Whats up guys,

What are yall's favorite dropshot set ups? I'm talking rod, reel, line, hooks and baits of choice! I'm interested in hearing what people from different areas throw.

Chime in!

I use a Steez SV, custom Lamiglas 863, 30# PP SS8 braid w/15# P-line CXX mono, 3/0 offset shank round bend Owner hook and either a brush hog or 6" Zoom lizard. There is very little open water where I fish, hence the need for heavier gear. Most of my ponds are continuous log jams because of the stupid beavers. I have been taking my shotgun when I fish, just in case I spot one. The shotgun works very well for the cottonmouths, too.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Most of the ponds where I'm from as well are heavily covered with lay downs, cat tails, and old duck blinds. I like the idea of the heavier line and gear, the bass don't seem to be too line shy.. but california is my second home so here I'm using a 7'4 Daiwa Tatula Elite Cody Meyer rod, Daiwa Procyon reel spooled with 15lb test and super long shot of 8lb flouro and i love to use the Dream Shot and some never fail roboworms. Love it for those deep smallies and spots!!

15 JDM Exist 2510
MB Shorluck 7'6ML
16LB Sunline Castaway PE
7lb Sunline Shooter Invisible Fluro (about 6ft)

I am normally fishing in 15-20ft. of open water around rock piles or sparce vegetation. My favorite bait right now is a 3 or 4 inch MB Ya Manba (soft plastic with a feather tail). Fish have never seen such a stupid thing and seem to take anger out on it.

Steez AGS 7’ ML with Tatula LT 4000, 15lb yo zuri braid blue color, seaguar 8lb leader 90% of the time. 1/2oz Swagger Tackle teardrop weight and vmc Neko hook size 1, 4” wacky Senko is the usual bait on this setup. Have a couple others for dropshotting but this is what I use the majority of the time, usually fishing 18-30 ft depending on the lake up here in MN.

I have several:

1) Simax TS Drop Shot (Stinger tip) 6"10" xxfast paired with a Shimano CI4+ 2500.
2) Megabass F3/12-70xx orochi paired with a a Shimano CI4+ 2500.
3) Daiwa Steez TS610MXXXF paired with Daiwa Ballistic LT 3000. (latest acquisition)

All rigged with 30lb braid usually Powerpro with a sunline 10lb flouro leader. I don't like the spinshot hooks so I attach the leader to the braid with a very small swivel.

Usually use Gamagatsu hooks 1/0 or 2/0 octopus. Teardrop drop shot weights ranging in 1/8 through 1/2 ounce depends on depth current and how my hands feel.

Right now I am not really sure about the Daiwa Steez rod. Favourite is the Simax (Currently not in production. They made a Great Lakes model that is very similar to the megabass Hedgehog evolution. Prone to breakage at the tip but very sensitive).

I picked up a St Croix Legend Tournament LBS86MLXF that is designed as a Drop Shot Hair rig rod but I have been throwing a Ned rig with it. I think this would be an awesome DS rod will try it sometime but not right now.

For DS baits I have been using XZone slammers, shiver shads and Jackal Crosstail shads.

I have two one for vertical and horizontal. NRX 902s/Exsence 3000MHG and Orochi XX Whipsnake/Exsence 3000MHG as well. Both spooled with 20lb Samuri and Tatsu 6lb leaders. 902s used more for dragging a swimbait like MB Hazedong 3"or Keitech Easy Shiner 3" whereas for video gaming I like Shad Shape worm or Xzone Shiver shads with my Whipsnake.

Light DS work - Megabass F4st-69RSTi hedgehog with daiwa exist 3000s-CXH, 14lb YGK galis ultra WX8 braid, 6lb tatsu leader.

Heavier DS - Megabass F3.5-611XS addermine with shimano stella FI 2500HGS, 18lb YGK WX8 braid, 8lb tatsu leader.

Cast/retrieve long range DS work - NRX 872S with shimano vanquish C3000XG, 18lb YGK WX8 braid, 8lb tatsu leader

My favorite DS bait is the 4" jackall crosstail shad. I also like use roboworm 4.5" ST worms, and alive shads. If the bites are light, I prefer nose hook setups especially with the crosstail shad. If bites are more assertive I will use longer/bigger baits and texas rig them using either a roboworm rebarb hook, or vmc #2 or 1/0 neko hook.

For a more traditional drop shot set up with the exposed hook I like the following set up:

Rod: Megabass Orochi XX Drop Shot Rod
Reel: Daiwa Tatula LT 2500
Line: 15# Power Pro with 6# Sunline FC Sniper top shot
Hook: size 2 Gamakatsu split shot/drop shot hook
Weight: Depends how deep I'm fishing and how windy it is but anywhere from 3/16 oz to 3/8 oz
Lure: Roboworms

For more of a weedless set up where I'm fishing a little bit more shallow with more weed cover:

Rod: Phenix M1 7'2 M/XF
Reel: Shimano Stradic Ci4
Line: 15# Power Pro with 8# Sunline FC Sniper top shot
Hook: size 1/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook
Weight: 3/16 oz
